America will survive.

In my view, conservatives make a mistake by tying their star too closely to the political fortunes of the GOP. The GOP is a political party. A political party exists to get it's members elected to political office, hard stop. I don't think that conservatism has actually won at the ballot box in many years. 1994 maybe, but perhaps not really since 1980 or 1984.

Conservatism has a very bright future in my view. But that's because of economics and technology, not so much because of electoral politics.

I don't believe that the rats have the intestinal fortitude to force Bush's hand on Iraq. They'll yammer a lot, and continue to make political hay, but in the end it will be all talk. They STILL do not have a plan of their own.

Additionally, we still have a solid filibuster capability in the Senate, and Bush can always shop around for a veto pen. I'm thinking it's going to be a nice, comfortable two years of solid gridlock. Sometimes gridlock is a good thing.

Of course, I'm not looking for the dinosaur newsrooms to repeat the phrase "do nothing Congress", or blame the Democrat Congress for gridlock like they blamed the Republican Congress under Clinton. No. Now that the shoes are reversed, it will be Bush who is the obstructionist.

(And I pray that he will indeed be an obstructionist.)

Our president and our troops are going to need our prayers and support now more than ever.

God willing, America will survive!

AMEN! We must rally behind them.

Indeed we do.

Thank you for providing this forum through the dark years of Clinton and the better years of Bush.

I can't remember how long I have been coming to this forum. It must be close to a decade now. From back when my daughter was young and so much of a Pikachu fan that somtimes 'pika pika' was all she would say. Her Pikachu doll got left behind in Texas he got frequent flier miles.

A split government, in time of war. Yuck. What were the American people thinking.

It might not always.

You have to consider: We COULD have lost the Cold War. We COULD have lost WW2. We didn't, thank God, because we had men in charge that weren't afraid, and a public that had guts and could withstand the pain of a fight.

I thought that 2004 answered that question, and that we did still have the strenght to fight. After tonight, I'm not sure.

The Lord Our God is the focus we all should have during these trying times. We as Americans carry the dream of our fore fathers, in our hearts, minds, bodies and souls.

As long as we stand on Gods Laws and guidance, we will be winning, as the godless, live on marginal borrowed time, basking in the darkness.

I stand at the ready with my fellow freepers, to hold the moral high ground, no matter what the odds.

God Bless us all, and guide us and our remaining reps, to make the right choices.

That was a big miscalculation for Snow to come up with that at a time like this. What in the heck are they thinking? Talk about rubbing salt into the wound.

Him,

You are so right that if we pull out too early it will spell disaster for the Iraqi people. We must stay and get the job done. I am very upset about the election results, but come tomorrow it's time to gather our strength and continue to fight the good fight.

If our President orders destruction of the nuclear facilities and other sites in Iran, the Democrats will have plenty of reason to vote in favor of all kinds of defense funding soon after that. May he stir up a hornets' nest over there, and soon.

I think it is time for those of us at Freerepublic to understand the challenge:

The Media has the power to win elections for the Left. Those in the MSM will be more emboldened than ever before.

The Internet is not an equal alternative to existing media. It does not reach viewers and listeners the same way; the MSM uses
quick messages and headlines to influence its audience.

We must be aware of the MSM and what it does; putting our heads in the sand on FR will not suffice. We must accept the MSM for what it is: A powerful adversary.

We must challenge the MSM. We must take them to task. We must push for fairness and truth. Ignoring the MSM gets us more of the same.

Remember, if the MSM was fair, we'd never lose an election.

We have survived before. I am not looking forward to being deployed with Morticia Pelosi standing behind me waving a dagger, but if I stretch way back in my career I can remember going into harm's way with a Democratic House and Senate and, God help us, Jimmy Carter as President.

It's going to get interesting trying to keep guys in the unit, though; most of them are keenly aware of politics and not eager to turn their backs on a Congress as deadly as any jihadi.

It's champagne time if you are a Democrat, a New York Times scrivener, or an al-Qaeda supporter -- but I three-peat myself.

The sad part is that dividing Iraq into three sections could leave the Kurds in a precarious place vis-a-vis Turkey, the Shia "annexed" by Iran, and the Sunnis in the center slaughtered by the advancing Iranian forces. If we're not there, nobody from the world community will be either. The Brits won't go back. The EU doesn't care, the other Arabs dare not intervene, NATO forces couldn't justify the assignment and the UN forces are a joke without us.

I'm reading THE POLITICALLY INCORRECT GUIDE TO ISLAM and believe that with the Dems in charge, the enemy will give us a reprieve. But it is a deceptive gesture to lure us into a false security as they restructure their assault. They cannot go without aggressively pursuring their jihad and America is foolish to believe the Dems or anyone who claims otherwise. We are a stupid, shallow, short-sighted people. The predictions were right--this isn't going to be another American Century. We're not up to the demands leadership requires.

Zackly! You pegged it.

When Clinton won in 92 it energized the conservative base.

But it is harder for the American people to see the villains as the the Dem Congress when a Rep is in the White House.

The real battle in the next two years will be for spin control over the coming disasters.

Jim:
There is something that Webb said here locally in Virginia that needs to be pointed out too: "Democrats need to concentrate on reconciliation to represent ALL of their constituents."
I truly hope that is the case, perhaps then there will be a silver lining in these dark clouds.
As pointed out by Fox News, most of the Dems in red states are center right ones so I am hopeful that they're not going to walk in lock step with the far left crowd.
Here in Virginia, for instance, we had a slam dunk on defining what marriage was...and Webb, like other red state Democrats--though misguided by political affiliation--at least have ties to the military and have distinguished themselves as patriots.
Kind regards!
