Time to say Mr. Rumsfeld, your services no longer needed?

Posted on 11/07/2006 10:04:17 PM PST by meandog

Okay history fans, if Bush is to be compared to Lincoln then maybe he ought to do what the embattled Lincoln did to first War Secretary Simon Cameron in 1862 when his Congress was under fire: Accept Rumsfeld's resignation. Supposedly, the Don of the Pentagon offered it on two occasions, according to the source himself and it is apparent that a change in the tactics of fighting a losing war are now needed. Rumsfeld went against the advice of sound judgement from generals such as Shenseki and others who urged him to invade with at least as many boots on the ground (600,000) as was required in Gulf War I. Ever the arrogant, he ignored them and came with only 120,000--the result was widespread looting, possible WMDs being shipped to places such as Syria and the beginnings of sectarian violence. With 600,000 we had a chance to employ the proven military doctrine of overwhelming force. Now, the opportunity is gone just like the majority we once had in Congress. And, while the president is at it, he might also consider what Lincoln did to Hannibal Hamlin.

MAN! EVEN 5 !! ONLY A MERE FIVE!!: (PICKED AT RANDOM!!) ; FREEPERS - COULD HAVE DONE BETTER NATIONALLY!

ROVE SHOULD HAVE PUT 500 BILLION ( JUST KIDDING OF COURSE ) JUST-- INTO-- A N Y --- NEW YORK --CANDIDATE - OR--ADVERTISEMENT--PUBLICITY ---527!! ANY GROUP!!----
-A* G* A* I* N* S* T* ---SCHRILLARY --JUST--- SO ---WE ---

THAT! WOULD HAVE BEEN MONEY BETER SPENT!--INSTEAD OF TELLING ALL YOUR LOYAL--NEW YORK CONSERVATIVES WHO HAVE BEEN OUT THERE THRU THICK AND THIN THAT YOUR STATE IS :

"...TOO FAR DEM.." TO EVEN T R Y TO GIVE SOME SUPPORT!

DID ROVE THINK THAT RUSH LIMBAUGH ALONE WOULD BE ABLE TO DO HIS WORK FOR HIM! ( ROVE WAS QUIETER THAN PELOSI OR REID AND THE REST WERE!!-DID ANY OF YOU HEAR HIM ANYWHERE? ONT HE AIR EXCEPT MAYBE ONCE?)

REMEMBER: "NEW YORKERS " - LIBERAL NEW YORKERS--ALSO

WHAT DID ROVE THINK?? THAT THE GREAT ONE MARK LEVIN AND HIS NYC FANS WOULD BE ABLE TO DO IT ALL ALONE WITHOUT ANY HELP AT ALL??!!

WHERE WAS THE BIG HOOPLA THAT ROVE SHOULD HAVE MADE WITH 9/11'S GROUND ZERO BEING IN NEW YORK!!
THE DEMS POLITICALIZE FUNERALS FOR GOODNESS SAKES!

You're making absolutely no sense. Additional troops have served no purpose since the end of combat operations against the former Iraqi Army. More to the point, it wasn't Rumsfeld's decision to keep troop levels where they're at; the commanding generals had that authority delegated to them

Horse doo-doo! Commanders had to "go to war with the Army they had" (his words). Commanders request more troops at the price of their career. Also, there is a money issue here, if you want to know the truth...the average E-3, when I was in the service (late 60s, early 70s) made barely $130/month, had no wife, and no vehicle. Today's all-vol troop enlists for a bonus and makes in the high $20K range, has a family, prefers to live off base and probably two vehicles. That was basically what was driving the train, that and maintaining Bush's promised tax cuts. So, though the genie was out of the bottle as far as wages go, we needed to go back to a draft with a minimum wage guarantee only to get back to a 4 million man Army. No one had the guts to fight for it.

You ever consider the fact that you might just be wrong? Tell me the strategy ace. I want to hear it.

Well, its something I picked up from a Marine colonel recently...
1. Instead of dismantling the entire Iraqi Bath army as we did to rebuild it, we should have done what Gen. Patton did with Wermach Nazis after WWII: Have the ones who are willing recant their oath to Saddam and swear it to their country, keep them in place to run the infrastructure. In such a way one maintains their pride and gains their loyalty.
2. Use overwhelming force (a proven American military doctrine that works every time) to beat down the resistance.
3. Seek out good leaders and reward them with American military education and know how to better their country.
4. Begin a program of immediate reconciliation for those who denounce violence.
5. Finally, ensure there are no humiliating instances like Abu Graib.

With respect, You are wrong on so many levels it's unreal.

Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld know more about what's really going on in Iraq and the greater WOT than you could know if you read every story ever printed about the subject. Rumsfeld had to rebuild and modernize an almost broken military (thanks to Clinton) while fighting 2 major wars and he has done a tremendous job.

His easiest day is worse than any stressful day most of us have had and I think the man deserves a break, especially from people on this board, especially tonight.

It is too late to get rid of Rumsfeld to do any good. But if he goes, then at least he won't be a political football in the Presidential election....maybe.

Not just Dem talking points! You should review some of the talking points by CONSERVATIVES (Jo Ann Davis, Michael Steele, Mark Sanford, Lindsay Graham, numerous flag and general officers) because it is the same thing they are saying!

To be honest, after the Dems elect Pelosi, I wish Pres. Bush and VP Cheney would step down and make that hag from SF the new President.

Tell the Ameican public, you wanted her, you got her. You think you are safe, well, lets see.

Dems said they want out of Iraq, take em out.

I would sooner that than to have him in high elective office. While I admire some of his traits, I still see him as a social moderate. Social moderates kill us when it comes to trying to move our agenda.
