Mark Steyn on the results...

Right now, this isn't a Dem landslide but a conventional Year Six election with an underperforming opposition party. 1938 Senate races: GOP picked up six seats. 1958 Senate election: Dems picked up 13 seats. 1986 Senate election: Dems picked up nine (net). In other words, by historical standards this is an excellent result for the President's party six years in. Needless to say, that's not a perspective the Dems, the media, the Europeans or the insurgents will have any time for....

Actually, the nation's map is being rationalized by this election: the Northeast is trending Blue along with the Midwest and the South and Rocky Mountain States will remain Red.

OK...i don't comment too much on FR....but by golly, the 800 pound gorilla in the living room is that we are in Iraq but 5 years after 9/11 we still don't have a handle on our own borders...i feel that is the biggest problem Bush/Pubs are looking at...IMO....most conservatives i know and even libs i know can see the irony in this.....sorry but it's true.

Yeah, it was brewing, but we weren't in it. That's the point. Reid is now on saying this has not been days of progress the past six years. 4.4 unemployment - arggh - everyone here knows it's a lie but they get away with. EF em!

The GOP lost a somewhat safe seat in Indiana because a Libertarian loon siphoned off enough votes to put the Dem over the top.

That is so gross.

And you Freepers who sat out or voted for your vaunted pot-smoking Libertarians - to quote Al Pacion - EF YOU TOO!!!!

I've heard of no evidence of the dreaded conservative boycott... got any?

One happy consequence of this election could be that all republicans direct their fire at the OTHER SIDE, the dims & libs, all the way to 2008 and not at each other. But we'll see.

No, I am not blaming all Freepers. But you know as well as I do that some on this board could not be convinced. Screw them!

"From our state-of-the-art campaign headquarters, I'll be monitoring developments all night until the last result is called. Well, okay, not until the very last: that'll be after the final court case, circa late spring. But I'll be staying up beyond my usual 9pm bedtime in order to track the big news. Join me for updates all night long - and keep hitting that refresh button.."

We lost some but considering the predictions, its been a very good night. The Drive By/MSM bedwetters were predicting a Democratic blowout. The Democrats may still win but they'll have slender majorities in Congress. Nothing like the huge Democratic margins we saw pre-1994. That's a thing of the past.

It ain't gonna be pretty ...

What do you think will happen in 2008 should the Democrats bring that much chaos on the country?

The way I figure it, the Democrats only have about 12 months to make good before the next season begins. The Republicans have the same amount of time to do better.

Im stumped on Santorum though

newcon, Santorum is indeed a good man. He was also probably the most Conservative Senator in the history of PA, certainly at least in the past 75 years at least. We were lucky to have him for 12 years, but the Casey name is magic in this state. I think half the people who voted for him thought they were voting for his father. Unfortunately, Casey will now be in the seat for the next 30-40 years.

You're right about the regional breakdown. Hillary is licking her lips (sorry for the visual). She knows the South is lost to her forever. The Dems needed Ohio and some other Midwest areas to go blue to give them power back in Congress and the presidency. Sadly they seem to have gotten it tonight.

How it happened I don't know. Probably Iraq, Iraq, Iraq.

One thing that may be depended upon - Dem'crats will be unable to stop themselves from being Dem'crats, and they will overreach. And since their reach will certainly exceed their grasp, they will be like the kid who tried to pull the whole fistful of cookies out of the cookie jar.

They are going to have to let go of something before they may pull out anything.

The Dem'crats may have a slim majority, but they shall not have a mandate.

This is the normal ebb and flow of politics in a free society. I'm already looking ahead to 2008.

Got news for you bub. Hitler invaded Poland in 1939. Get that? 1939! And even after that, the majority of America wanted nothing of that. Yeah, it was brewing in 1938 but it had not yet started and we were not in the middle of it. Give me the election results of 1942, 1944, and 1946. Did FDR's party lose then? The point is, we are in the middle of effing war and the vast majority of the people in the United States cannot see the danger.

"Howard Dean on the war: "We have to get out of Iraq." That's what this election means to the rest of the world."

I'm sorry, this is the money line. The American people have shown the Islamofacists that we don't have the stomach to fight.

Agreed. Its not a mandate for the Democrats. Its more of a protest vote against Bush and to a lesser extent against the Republicans.

What do you expect the way the social conservatives treat libertarians?

Yep. They can try to fake it on the campaign trail, but a little whiff of power and the fangs and horns will come right out.

And I said fangs, not fags.

The Dems startegy this time: non-stop Bush and Iraq bash with the help of the media; mudsling on every GOP candidate about sex, lies, corruption; run "conservative" and military candidates in red-state areas; say nothing in regard to plans and solutions, just muddy the water and play on the voters fear and frustration.

Seems to have worked - in certain areas, anyway. I must say the GOP helped make this possible by not doing enough to keep the focus on good economy, important issues, etc. But they had an uphill fight.
