Right now, this isn't a Dem landslide but a conventional Year Six election with an underperforming opposition party. 1938 Senate races: GOP picked up six seats. 1958 Senate election: Dems picked up 13 seats. 1986 Senate election: Dems picked up nine (net). In other words, by historical standards this is an excellent result for the President's party six years in. Needless to say, that's not a perspective the Dems, the media, the Europeans or the insurgents will have any time for....
That sounds like the 2 main food groups!
Spin it how you want but the end result is that Nancy Pelosi is the Speaker of the House and the Dems are running important committees in the midst of the war on terror. And the consequences for the border issue are tremendous. This has been a bad night.
"xcept, what the hell was going on in the world in 1938, 1958, and 1986. NOTHING! Here we are in the beginning of a long, brutal, and bitter war and the nation throws it towards the Dems."
A joke?
1938 had Hitler
1958 was the midst of the cold war
1986 was the least perilous of the three but the cold war was still going on.
"er our southern border and ultimately the enemy is the same.Pass an amnesty bill and we will have 40 million more illegal Latinos in a decade or less."
Bingo. Once amnesty happens we can never go back.
The Dems startegy this time: non-stop Bush and Iraq bash with the help of the media; mudsling on every GOP candidate about sex, lies, corruption; run "conservative" and military candidates in red-state areas; say nothing in regard to plans and solutions, just muddy the water and play on the voters fear and frustration.
This daily drumbeat was not countered!
Well, I could post a third choice but threads are too serious tonight for fooling around!!
Most people in the Oval Office cannot see the danger either. If they had, Sadr City would have been levelled two years ago and Muqtada al-Sadr would be hanging in the gallows beside Saddam come January.
And Eisenhower sent 14,000 troops into Lebanon that year:
President Eisenhower responded by authorizing Operation Blue Bat on July 15, 1958. The goal of the operation was to bolster the pro-Western Lebanese government of President Camille Chamoun against internal opposition and threats from Syria and the United Arab Republic. The plan was to occupy and secure the Beirut International Airport, a few miles south of the city, then to secure the port of Beirut and approaches to the city. The operation involved approximately 14,000 men, including 8,509 Army personnel, including a contingent from the 24th Airborne Brigade of the 24th Infantry Division (Germany) and 5,670 officers and men of the Marine Corps. The presence of the troops successfully quelled the opposition and the U.S. withdrew its forces on October 25, 1958.And he sent the US Navy into the Taiwan Straights to support Taiwan and even threatened Nuclear War on Chinese cities to get the point across.
In 1958 the Chinese Communist Party launched the Great Leap Forward ....From 23 August through October of 1958, the Communist government resumed a massive artillery bombardment of Quemoy and Matsu, and threatened invasion. Chinese patrol boats blockaded Quemoy and Matsu against Chinese Nationalist resupply efforts This was accompanied by an aggressive propaganda assault on the United States, threats against American naval ships, and a declaration of intent to "liberate" Taiwan. Quemoy, which lies about 10 kilometres from the mainland, had been used by the Nationalists to mount raids on mainland China.
Once the shelling began, the United States made it clear that it would support the ROC in the defense of the islands. Responding to public commitments by the US to defend Quemoy and Matsu, the Eisenhower Administration deployed forces to the region. The American response included a large naval contingent in the Taiwan Straits. The defenders of the islands were supplied by ships escorted by US naval vessels. Senior American officials, including President Eisenhower and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, publicly affirmed the US commitment to defend Taiwan and to counter naval threats in the Taiwan Straits. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles declared that the U.S. would take "timely and effective action to defend Taiwan".
American naval aircraft also helped the Nationalist air force establish control of the regions airspace. Nationalist pilots flying American-made fighters defeated their Communist opponents in a series of air battles that cast doubt on the quality of Communists pilots and aircraft. As tension mounted between the United States and China, the US Joint Chiefs of Staff developed plans for nuclear strikes at the Chinese cities of Shanghai, Guangzhou and Nanjing. These plans were consistent with the public statements of Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, who on 12 January 1954 had threatened "massive retaliation" against Communist aggression and expressed willingness to go "to the brink" of war to stop such aggression. The Joint Chiefs of Staff war plans for defense of the islands moved automatically into nuclear strikes on Shanghai and Canton, among other mainland China targets, resulting in millions of non-combatant casualties. ...
Despite Soviet support of the People's Republic of China's claims to the islands, the bombardment abated, then virtually ceased after President Eisenhower warned that the United States would not retreat "in the face of armed aggression."
In 1986 President Reagan bombed Libya and finished the deployment of hundreds of nuclear-tipped Pershing II IRBMs in Germany and England.
But compared to 58 and 38 it wasn't quite as threatening a time.
I'm ready for this. If my 401(k) loses a dime or the price of gas goes up a nickle...it's the Dimms' fault! Not to mention another attack on American soil.
Not any more.
the Santorum thing is actually pretty simple. Dem voters do not look at things such as capabilities or performance
they simply look to see the "D" or "R" after a name. And with Pittsburgh and Philly solidly in control of Dem machines there just aren't enough votes left in the rest of the state to matter.
It is the morning and I am still pissed off. We spend so much time arguing over details. Yeah, I know events were happening in those years. But the main point I am trying to express is was there a sense of foreboding and danger as there is today. I cannot speak for 38 because I wasn't there. Nor can I speak for 58 because I was a baby. But for the events happening in 86, I was around then. I was in the Navy. There was no sense of danger in the air.
We got boots on the ground fighting people who have said it in speeches and in writings that they want to destroy the U.S. and return to an 7th century Islamic state. I mention this to people and all I get is a blank stare. I mention The Looming Tower and I get the blank stare. I mention The Path To 9/11 and I get the blank stare. I mention Obsession and they look at me as if I am a nut. Maybe I am. Maybe I am too involved in this crap. Maybe I need a vacation.
I have been knocking an idea around in my head since before the election. The idea came from writing letters to my local paper in support of candidates and not having them printed. I get frustrated because not only my voice but I think the voices of thousands of people are not being heard. I want to start some sort of local newsletter in my county that discusses conservative Republicanism. I would want to discuss -
The definition of conservatism - it's not just about money.
The origins of the Republican Party - it's not just big business and low taxes.
Defend the miltary as a worthy and honorable institution.
Spotlight someone in the military - either a medal winner from Iraq, a local servicemember away from home, or talk about a military hero.
Discuss county issues and how they effect the citizens.
Discuss Maryland issues and how they effect the citizens.
Discuss national issues and how they effect the citizens.
Spotlight a conservative Repbublican.
And the main thing I want to do is concentrate on young people - starting from age 15 on up - and explain to them what conservatism means.
I apologize and I am sorry for my rant of last night. We all are working for the same goal. I am sorry I was such an arsehole last night.
I believe what some other posters have said. We need to either revamp the Republican Party or start a new one that reflects American values. We may need to spend 20, 30, 40 years in the wilderness but I think we could do this.
I apologize and I am sorry for my rant of last night. We all are working for the same goal. I am sorry I was such an arsehole last night.

Don't forget McDermott, folks. Don't forget McDermott. Of all of them, he's the most wrapped around the axle against America.
