FedEx cancels order for 10 Airbus A380s

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - FedEx Corp. said Tuesday it has canceled its order for 10 Airbus A380 jets, the new jumbo double-decker plane that has been dogged by numerous delays.

The company's FedEx Express unit has ordered 15 Boeing Co. 777 Freighters, and has options to purchase an additional 15, FedEx said in a news release. The company cited Airbus' production delays as the reason for the decision.

Nah. That honor is falling on the TnNG. They are bringing in some flying monstrosity and the airport is undergoing a refit and expansion. FDX is just too happy to "assist" with it financially.

Was that the one where they were having problems retracting the landing gear? I loved their solution, put a slick Teflon like coating where the parts were rubbing and when that didn't work, I think they covered it with grease. Even then it didn't work too smoothly. LOL!

The real problem.

The plane came in several tons overweight than what was contractually promised.

FedEx is convinced that the 747 is not economical for the type of cargo (all containerized) we carry. But I sure wish we'd buy them too.

Just yesterday a FReeper was saying that should two major buyers of the A380 cancel their pre-orders, the entire program will be canceled.

Suddenly, with this article, that statement makes sense....I think this is "Major buyer number 1".

I could be wrong, but I seem to recall an article in the Indianapolis Star indicating that FedEx was already upgrading their facilities at the Indianapolis airport to handle the 380. (I think at least one of the runways could already handle the 380 without needing an upgrade).

But I've been wrong before...

They would have to use more lightweight materials in the interior, such as composite materials for all the seat frames, etc...

but that raises the price of the plane greatly and the customers are going to demand Airbust pay for these, not them.

Not this time. You are correct. Same at Anchorage. Like I said, they've already spent millions of dollars preparing for the 380. And Fred Smith does NOT like to waste money. That's why this decision is such a big indicator of major problems with the 380. I suspect it is toast.
