That was pretty graphic for the state of the technology back then. I was in my early teens when I saw it--rather disturbing to me then. But then again I saw Jaws II when I was even younger and had nightmares for months after.

I saw a trailer for that movie back in 1981 or 82...to this day, the mere image of that guy's melon blowing like that unsettles me. One of the great movie trailers of all time, if we're thinking of the same one. Instead of the standard fare of a series of clips from the movie it was one extended scene from Scanners that grew in intensity until the infamous head explosion. Relative to most generic film trailers of the era, it was a total shocker.
