BAGHDAD, Iraq Saddam Hussein and two other men were convicted and sentenced Sunday to death by hanging for war crimes in the 1982 killings of 148 people in the town of Dujail, as the former leader, trembling, shouted "God is great!"

After the verdict was read, Saddam yelled out, "Long live the people and death to their enemies. Long live the glorious nation, and death to its enemies!"
Clashes immediately broke out in north Baghdad's heavily Sunni Azamiyah district.

I'm new so I hope this comes out well.
I'd like to think this sentence will be carried out judiciously.

''I'd like to think this sentence will be carried out judiciously."
The point is not so much eliminating saddam [that could have been achieved during his capture] as doing so in a manner most humiliating to saddam and - more importantly - to saddamism. The least they could do is to hang him with panties on his head instead of a sack.

Second time around for Saddam. Sentenced to death in the 50s too. No doubt his being dead will fix everything. zzzzz

No CathyC, it won't fix everything, but will it remove a mass murderer from thae world and it will be a monumental symbol of victory in a land where symbols mean everything.

It's my understanding of Iraqi law that a death sentence is to be carried out within 30 days.

I'm under the impression that there are 11, count them 11, more trials SCHEDULED. As much as I'd like to see him swinging from a rope, I don't think this is going to happen by Tuesday morning. I don't recall when or where I heard about the other trials. Anyone else that knows? Blackbird.
