For weeks, commentators have speculated that significant numbers of conservatives, alienated by over-spending, the Iraq War, and other perceived GOP disappointments, will stay home on Election Day, giving one or both Houses of Congress to Democrats. But for those who care about reforming the Supreme Court, sitting this one out may soon look like a mistake of historic proportions.
For the past several weeks, there has been a rumor circulating among high-level officials in Washington, D.C., that a member of the U.S. Supreme Court has received grave medical news and will announce his or her retirement by years end. While such rumors are not unusual in the nations capital, this one comes from credible sources. Additionally, a less credible but still noteworthy post last week at the liberal Democratic Underground blog says, Send your good vibes to Justice Stevens. I just got off the phone with a friend of his family and right now he is very ill and at 86 years old that is not good.

Apparently you cannot distinguish between them spreading news they would hate and news they would love.
Dear God! It will take 60 votes for Bush to get a nominee through to replace Stevens!!!!
Hear, hear!
"It points out what could be a once-in-a-lifetime chance for the 20-year movement to recast the court with a constitutionalist majority. It would be a cruel twist indeed for conservatives to teach Republicans a lesson next Tuesday, only to be taught a lesson themselves within months when new Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D.-Vt.) leads a Democratic majority against the most important Supreme Court nominee in decades. Conservatives whose mantra is no more Souters should bear in mind Robert Borks fate after the Senate changed from Republican to Democratic hands in 1986."
The most important sentences of the story.
The higher they climb, the harder they fall.
if Democrats win the House...
John Conyers will take over the Judiciary Committee and he has promised to launch impeachment hearings.
There would be nothing to stop the Haters from attacking ANYONE Bush appointed. They alread have stopped the appointment of a conservative Hispanic to a lower court.
And the Treason media would not hesitate in painting her as one who regularly slaughters kittens and puppies.

You are absolutely right. Talking about cutting off your nose to spite your face. I hope conservatives read and heed it.
Which is why is just hacks me off to no end to have the GOP just give away Congressional races in red states like ND and SD on years like this -- and to make incredibly stupid mistakes like WY, which should be a no-brainer...
We just can't afford to give away seats like that.
Voting for Perot to punish Bush 41 got us Clinton.
Voting to punish republicans is not a good idea.
IMHO
I took advantage of the "vote early" option here in Illinois just so I could help focus on GOTV efforts on Monday and Tues. of next week.
NUCLEAR OPTION!
There are many races that should not be close this year.
Second, we should own ND and SD and WV Senate seats...we do in presidential races.
I do not understand why the local R party can not find good mayors or governors who will run and who can win on the federal level.
Exactly. Even if we keep the Senate by razor-thin margins, we will have enough of the Gang of 14 left to keep the Dems in line by threatening to support a nuclear move.
But, if we lose the Senate.....the Gang will be neutered and nullified. They won't be able to do a dang thing since our judges won't even get a vote.
"I'm quite active in GOTV efforts and let me tell you, TONS of (R) people are voting."
Bump to that. This MSM depress-the-GOP b.s. is failing miserably. Sure, watching or reading MSM, the conservative base may be DEPRESSED, but they are still VOTING.
Great post! (#9)
Looks that way with that and the Jake Ford stuff...Dems seem to be writing off the TN Senate race now.
All Bush would have to do is appoint, say Janice Roberts Brown, after the next Congress convenes and goes into recess. She would stay in office till Jan 2009. It has been done before.
