I'm so sorry--I just read of the death of your Father. I know how you feel, as my Mother died unexpectedly two weeks ago. God Bless you and your family.

Update: Robert called about 20 minutes ago to let us know he was getting ready to board his flight for the last leg of his journey home. We will be leaving home between 3:00pm and 3:30pm for the drive to the Sacramento airport.

Hold your son close to you, SoldierDad. May he bring you great comfort and may you grow even closer as you endure this time of grief together. May God send many blessings your way even in the midst of your sorrow.

Robert is home now. We arrived home around 45 minutes ago and he's getting settled in. We've not yet had a chance to break the news to him about his grandfather's passing. More to follow as things develop.

Final update on Robert's homecoming. My wife and I broke the news to him this morning about his grandfather's death. He was shocked and grieved, but as a testiment to his strength of character and his warrior spirit he was greatful that he had all the good memories of his grandfather. Robert is adjusting to this tragic news very well, and has gone to cast his ballot in this day's election. His grandfather was a strong conservative Republican, as are his four grandchildren in our household, and Robert will be voting for conservative Republicans this day. We plan to make the trip to my dad's home in Central California on Thursday to help support my step-mother and begin the task of going through my father's effects. Robert and Rick will be going down with me.

I again wish to express my gratitude to you all for the wonderful sentiments and prayers offered to our family during this difficult time. I've shared with Robert all of the comments, prayers, and well wishes expressed here on FR and he was greatly impressed and appreciative. We now begin looking forward to the time we will have with Robert over the next couple of weeks or so. As we get closer to Robert's departure time for his return to the "Sandbox" I will post an announcement of his departure.

SoldierDad.

SD,

So very, very sorry. I'm glad that as you grieve the loss of your dad, you will have by your side the one who feels about you as you did about him, one who reverently calls you "Dad".

Faith,

Robert wants me to tell you "thank you" for your kind words. He just shared with me that around 15 hours before he called us from Kuwait to let us know that he was on schedule for his leave, the group he was with were told that their leaves were going to be delayed by at least a full day or longer because they did not have a plane available to fly them to Germany. There was only one plane, and the priority for boarding was those who were redeploying to their home bases, not those going on leave. An E-5 (Sargent) "broke" the rules by telling his superiors that the group Robert was with were redeploying home (as opposed to going on leave), thus allowing them to board. Thanks to this Sargent, Robert was able to get home on time and to us to help with our grieving. Our Lord was working that day to answer our need, and I give Him praise for that work.
