Raymond Lee Oyler, 36, Allegedly Started Esperanza Fire (CBS) POPPET FLATS, Calif. Riverside County prosecutors will file five first-degree murder charges Thursday against Raymond Lee Oyler, 36, of Beaumont, along with multiple counts of arson for allegedly starting the Esperanza Fire that killed five firefighters and burned more than 40,000 acres.
Oyler is scheduled to be arraigned in Riverside County Superior Court at 1:30 p.m. He was arrested Tuesday as part of the sweeping investigation into the arson fire that began at 1:12 a.m. Oct. 26.
Oyler is being held on $25,000 bail.
District Attorney-elect Rod Pacheco said prosecutors have not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty.
"In the next 60 days, our office will make its determination whether or not to seek the death penalty against the suspect and soon-to-be defendant, but only after a careful and sober review of the evidence, the defendant's background and the particular nature and circumstances of this case," Pacheco said. "The lives and tragic deaths of the five-man fire crew of the United States Forest Service Engine 57 will be considered... and the impact of their deaths on their family, friends, loved ones and children will be weighed and added to the balance to make that determination.
"The feelings of the surviving family members of the victims will be consulted and be given great weight by our office in what is always a difficult decision," he said.

Can't tell you how angry I feel at this POS, now that we know ...
Thats all? Im hoping its a typo..
The three-named hillbilly is the most dangerous.
Me, too. That is unreal.
Why did he do it?
That bail amount is for the arson charges he is currently facing, and does not include any murder charges. As soon as he is charged, I am sure bail will be in the millions.
They will up the bail when the new charges are filed. The $25,000 bail is probably for some lesser charges.
Only thing that could have been worse was if his middle name was "Wayne."
Hang em high.
Just heard on the news....He will be charged with 5 counts of murder in the 1st degree, including 2 charges with special circumstances (death penalty qualifier), as well as several arson counts.
This pig is going down.
I doubt he will see true justice in California. Send him back to Texas, we will take care of him.
Ah, that makes sense..
I wonder why only 2 charges of special circumstances?
bttt
Do we know if this guy was part of the 'skinhead' group the police was looking into earlier? (not saying they are skinheads, just that they were described that way)
These are the initial charges, to hold him without bail. I'm sure they will be revised later.
"the criminal complaint against Oyler will also include the special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and that the murders were committed during the commission of an arson. "
I hadn't heard that, only that he had been involved in a previous arson fire.
We don't know yet if he did it.
