Iraqi forces have seized a donkey laden with land mines on the border with Iran, police in the border province of Diyala said Wednesday.
"Smugglers were bringing 52 mines from Iran on a donkey. When we intercepted them, the smugglers managed to escape back across the border but we got the donkey," an officer told AFP on condition of anonymity.
Iraq is in the throes of a violent sectarian conflict and US commanders accuse Iranian agents of supplying weapons to Shiite militia groups linked to Iraq's ruling parties.

Iraqi forces find donkeys laden with anti-tank mines near Iran border
Iraqi security forces intercepted six donkeys carrying 53 anti-tank mines and an anti-tank rocket near the border with Iran, the U.S. military said.
A U.S.-led coalition bomb disposal team detonated the munitions in a safe area, the military said today in an e-mailed statement. Two men fled the vicinity of yesterday's interception, three miles from the border, and the donkeys were set free to roam.
"This action by an alert Iraqi border patrol prevented dozens of very lethal munitions from being employed by terrorists," said Colonel Gary Patton, Task Force Lightning chief of staff, in the statement. Task Force Lightning patrols the border in the eastern Diyala province along with the Iraqi police and army units.
Iran and Iraq fought an eight-year war that ended in 1988 and left about one million people dead. Since the 2003 ouster of Saddam Hussein, though, the two countries have expanded economic and energy ties.

Weapons of Ass Destruction on the move.
Holy Shiite! Fifty two mines! They could blow their ass up!
Not to be picky or anything, but if we/they were fighting the war to win, we/they would have pursued the smugglers back across the border and killed them all on the spot. Just like the Korean war and the Vietnam war, we/they are fighting under State Department rules. As one Korean fighter pilot wrote, any schoolchild knows that if you have a problem with wasps, you go after the nest; you can't solve the problem by going after them one by one.
Good one!
ya forgot PC RULES!!!!!!
Shoot all illegal alien donkeys on sight!
Pinging jveritas. Didn't you translate a document about this very subject?
(Note: in the above the usage of the word "you" does not imply "Bush." I have to clarify that for the liberals who may be reading this.)

S O Freakin' B's!
Leave the poor animals alone.
Use fellow Muslims as moving bombs instead.
Exactly! The Iranians have been running HUGE interference in Iraq, sending terrorists, mines, weapons, explosives, ammunition and cash across the border. Our response? NOTHING.
We must send a THREAT to the Iranians... Anything larger than a field mouse that crosses the border will be exterminated with chain guns.
Instead, we'll sit on our hands and allow Iranian influence to kill more US military personnel.
How are we supposed to win this???
We can't do anything about it right now, the media would have a field day over "Bush's Failed Policies on Iraq" spilling over into peaceful neighboring countries, and the election is coming up, so we have to keep a low profile. This is why I think Democrats are directly responsible for the deaths of US soldiers. They tie the soldiers' hands, and then gloat over high casualty numbers, as if a gift from their evil diety, which must be the devil because they don't believe in God.
We're not supposed to win it. We are supposed to lose it, again, as part of the long-term plan for submerging the U.S. under global government. This same thing has happened too many times, under too many different Administrations, for it to be mere incompetence.
