Iraqi forces find donkeys laden with anti-tank mines near Iran border
Iraqi security forces intercepted six donkeys carrying 53 anti-tank mines and an anti-tank rocket near the border with Iran, the U.S. military said.
A U.S.-led coalition bomb disposal team detonated the munitions in a safe area, the military said today in an e-mailed statement. Two men fled the vicinity of yesterday's interception, three miles from the border, and the donkeys were set free to roam.
"This action by an alert Iraqi border patrol prevented dozens of very lethal munitions from being employed by terrorists," said Colonel Gary Patton, Task Force Lightning chief of staff, in the statement. Task Force Lightning patrols the border in the eastern Diyala province along with the Iraqi police and army units.
Iran and Iraq fought an eight-year war that ended in 1988 and left about one million people dead. Since the 2003 ouster of Saddam Hussein, though, the two countries have expanded economic and energy ties.
