AA Jet from NYC Makes Emergency Landing in Fla.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- An American Airlines jet headed from New York to the Dominican Republic made an emergency landing in Daytona Beach after smoke filled the aircraft, airline officials said.

An air circulation malfunction was the problem aboard flight 635 Wednesday, said Andy Backover, a spokesman for American Airlines. None of the 252 crew or passengers on the plane needed medical treatment, Backover said.

The flight left New York's Kennedy Airport shortly after 2 p.m. and landed at Daytona Beach International Airport shortly after 4 p.m. It was on the ground for about 2 hours while maintenance crews fixed the problem, Backover said.

During that time, 40 passengers got off the plane and were bused to Orlando where they were rebooked on another flight, he said.

The plane landed safely in Santo Domingo at 9:12 p.m.

Telephone calls placed to the Federal Aviation Administration and Daytona Beach International Airport were not immediately returned Thursday morning.

Pretty scary.

So how have you been weathering the storm? I see there's no let-up and no down here. The fight against the terror on TM continues

Yes, the war against terror continues on TM.

OPINION:The war is being ignored in Washington; their
focus is on politics and bringing whatever good
people are left, down.

Our enemies are joyful.
They will not tire.
They will not stop.

Prayer is powerful.
God's will be done.

"Beheaded girls were Ramadan 'trophies'"
Stephen Fitzpatrick, Jakarta correspondent
November 09, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "THREE Christian high school girls were beheaded as a Ramadan "trophy" by Indonesian militants who conceived the idea after a visit to Philippines jihadists, a court heard yesterday.

The girls' severed heads were dumped in plastic bags in their village in Indonesia's strife-torn Central Sulawesi province, along with a handwritten note threatening more such attacks.

The note read: "Wanted: 100 more Christian heads, teenaged or adult, male or female; blood shall be answered with blood, soul with soul, head with head."

Javanese trader Hasanuddin appeared in Jakarta Central Court yesterday charged with planning and directing the murders in October last year. He faces a death sentence if found guilty under anti-terrorism legislation.

Hasanuddin allegedly returned from a visit to members of Philippines Islamist group the Moro Islamic Liberation Front with tales of how that organisation regularly staged bombings to coincide with Lebaran, the festival that ends the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. He later spoke with a preacher in Poso, Central Sulawesi, about whether such a plan could work in Indonesia, but expressed doubt about whether it was appropriate.

However, after further discussion with friends, he decided that beheading Christians could qualify as an act of Muslim charity."

Reward Offered for Information Leading to Kidnapped Soldier

By Donna Miles
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Nov. 9, 2006 – Officials in Iraq are offering up to $50,000 for information leading to Spc. Ahmed Kousay Altaie, a 41-year-old U.S. Army Reserve soldier kidnapped Oct. 23 outside Baghdad’s International Zone.
Army Gen. George W. Casey Jr., commander of Multinational Force Iraq, got permission today to offer the reward, Army Maj. Gen. William Caldwell, MNFI spokesman, told military analysts today. Caldwell said he expected the command to announce the reward publicly within the next 24 hours.

In the meantime, a massive search for Altaie continues, with Casey contributing coalition forces from outside Baghdad to the coalition and Iraqi security force members within the city already involved.

These troops have conducted 51 search operations, based on 328 tips that have poured in since Altaie’s abduction, Caldwell said. Those raids netted 35 suspects, most still being detained because they are providing valuable information, he said.

“We have fairly good information that tells us where we think he could still be held and who perhaps may have him,” he said.

One coalition soldier and two Iraqi security members have been killed in the search and six coalition troops have been wounded, he said.

Caldwell insisted that the search won’t let up until Altaie is found. “We are not going to stop looking until we find him. We’re just not,” he said. “And we’re going to continue the intensive efforts we have. It’s an ongoing, very focused effort.”

Altaie is an Iraqi-American who moved to the United States as a teenager and joined the Army Reserve in December 2004. He was mobilized in August 2005 and deployed to Iraq three months later, Caldwell said. He was last seen inside Baghdad’s International Zone at about 2:30 p.m. Oct. 23. Sometime after that, he left the heavily fortified zone to visit family members, including his Iraqi wife, whom he married in February 2005, Caldwell said.

While Altaie was at a relative’s home, three cars pulled up to the residence, and the hostage takers handcuffed the soldier and forced him into one of the vehicles, Caldwell said. A relative who claimed to be at the home when the incident occurred reported receiving a call from one of the kidnappers using the cell phone Altaie had with him when he was taken, Caldwell said.

Iraqi, Coalition Forces Search for Weapons, Repel Attack

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Nov. 9, 2006 – Iraqi and coalition soldiers searched the Al Gafour Mosque in Hit, Iraq, yesterday after receiving small-arms fire and rocket-propelled-grenade attacks from insurgents within the mosque compound.
The combined forces established a cordon around the mosque before entering. During the cordon, they received additional small-arms fire from nearby insurgents. The forces returned fire, and then Iraqi soldiers entered and led the search of the mosque and two nearby buildings.

During the search of the buildings adjacent to the mosque, the forces found one RPG warhead, one foot of detonation cord, one propane tank packed with explosives and one acetylene tank packed with explosives. The troops detained three suspected insurgents.

An explosive ordnance disposal team determined the munitions were intended to be used as improvised explosive devices and destroyed the material. No Iraqi or coalition troops died or were injured in the attacks and subsequent searches of the mosque compound.

The U.S. Army’s 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, is the coalition unit responsible for training Iraqi security forces and providing security to Hit, a city of about 60,000 located 35 miles northwest of Ramadi in Anbar province.

Elsewhere, Iraqi security and coalition forces came under fire Nov. 7 when anti-Iraqi forces attacked a joint Iraqi and U.S. patrol near Dugmat, a small town about 45 kilometers south of Kirkuk, and fled to a compound where the fighting continued.

One coalition servicemember died in the operation and another three were injured. Officials estimated 25 to 30 insurgents took part in the attack.

After contact, the enemy fighters dispersed in several directions. Coalition helicopters tracked and attacked one group of vehicles, while another group fled to a compound outside the town. This group was heavily armed with machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and a large stockpile of ammunition, U.S. officials said.

Coalition attack helicopters, ground troops and close-air-support aircraft engaged the enemy, destroying their vehicles and hiding positions with precision fires, killing eight, capturing 14 and neutralizing various weapons and munitions.

(Compiled from Multinational Corps Iraq news releases.)
