AA Jet from NYC Makes Emergency Landing in Fla.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- An American Airlines jet headed from New York to the Dominican Republic made an emergency landing in Daytona Beach after smoke filled the aircraft, airline officials said.
An air circulation malfunction was the problem aboard flight 635 Wednesday, said Andy Backover, a spokesman for American Airlines. None of the 252 crew or passengers on the plane needed medical treatment, Backover said.
The flight left New York's Kennedy Airport shortly after 2 p.m. and landed at Daytona Beach International Airport shortly after 4 p.m. It was on the ground for about 2 hours while maintenance crews fixed the problem, Backover said.
During that time, 40 passengers got off the plane and were bused to Orlando where they were rebooked on another flight, he said.
The plane landed safely in Santo Domingo at 9:12 p.m.
Telephone calls placed to the Federal Aviation Administration and Daytona Beach International Airport were not immediately returned Thursday morning.
