Republicans Challenge Voter Rolls in Westchester (NY)

YONKERS, Oct. 31 — Republicans are challenging the right of thousands of registered voters in the local State Senate district to cast ballots on Nov. 7, charging that these voters do not live at the addresses listed with the Westchester County Board of Elections.

The dispute set off a war of words between the district’s longtime incumbent, State Senator Nicholas A. Spano, and his Democratic rival, Andrea Stewart-Cousins, whom Mr. Spano beat by just 18 votes in 2004, after a contentious recount that lasted three months.

John Ciampoli, a Republican lawyer who handled the recount for Mr. Spano two years ago, said he found the discrepancies after checking postal change-of-address cards against district’s voting rolls. On Friday, Mr. Ciampoli submitted the challenges to the Board of Elections, questioning the validity of 5,929 voter registrations and asking the board to send police officers to voters’ homes to find out if any of them had moved.

Ms. Stewart-Cousins, a six-term county legislator, held a flurry of news conferences criticizing the challenges. In an interview, she called the idea of using officers to verify addresses as “an attempt to intimidate voters before the voting even begins.”

Mr. Ciampoli, who lives on the outskirts of Albany, said he filed the challenges on behalf of the state’s Republican Party and the Westchester Republican Committee. In 2004, he successfully challenged hundreds of paper ballots most likely cast for Ms. Stewart-Cousins in...

Carolee C. Saunderland, a Republican commissioner at the county’s Board of Elections, said that the process of verifying the challenged addresses could not be completed by Election Day. To check the addresses, first-class letters are mailed to each person on the list, and if they are returned as undeliverable, the police are sent to the address to check if the voter still lives there.

Nick Spano used to be a pretty good legislator, but he "grew in office" like Patakifeller and so many ohter New York "Republicans."

That doesn't work. I get mail at my home addressed to three previous occupant, one who lived here 15 years ago. I toss 'em. For a year, I forwarded mail sent to the previous owners of the house. They called me and whined that I was sending them junk mail. So I toss all the mail addressed to them, too.

Our local democratic board of elections does some insidious things.
I sent a change of address notice in about 6 months ago.
A week before the primary, I still hadn't received my new voter card, and in our county you must present your voter card and a picture id to vote. I called them, eventually ending up with the head registrar. She said yes they had received my change of address request, But i was listed as inactive - even thought I vote in every election, so they didn't mail me a new card. They said there wouldn't be time to get me a new card before the primary. I said you had better send me a document that allows me to vote, or I would complain to the state board of elections. She then agreed that she could get me a temporay letter of registration. Oh the joys of being a Republican in a democratic majority state ( Florida has more dems than repubs.) I'm sure that being on the inactive list, my votes would have been challenged in the general election.

So all one needs is to have a bona fide voter at a legal address - and let people from anywhere use the address - not much of a check and balance system,...This is undoubtedly a very effective fraud scheme.

I get mail at my address for a grandson in the service for a son whose job takes him across the country on his job and for my daughter and son-in-law - he's "on Loan" to the RCAF in Nova Scotia as a flight instructor - but it's beneficial to have my US address for many transactions. But their legal voting addresses are not here.
