WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic Sen. John Kerry said on Wednesday he was sorry about a "botched joke" that drew election-year fire from President George W. Bush and other Republicans who accused him of insulting U.S. troops in Iraq.
Kerry reiterated the target of his joke was Bush, who immediately seized on the senator's remarks to rally Republican supporters ahead of Tuesday's elections, in which the party's control of Congress is at risk.
Kerry said he was returning to Washington from a trip campaigning on behalf of Democratic congressional candidates because he did not want to be "a distraction."
A day after rejecting calls to apologize for his remarks, Kerry, appearing on the "Imus in the Morning" radio show on MSNBC, declared: "I said it was a botched joke. Of course, I'm sorry about a botched joke."
While campaigning in California on Monday, Kerry told a college crowd: "You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."
Kerry's office said the senator had misread his prepared remarks. They said he had intended to say, "Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq. Just ask President Bush."
SHOW ME THE PAPER! This is the fourth rendition I have heard from his staff as to "how" he botched the joke.
Credit given where credit due: He botched!
"What would Gingrich, Lott, and a host of other honorable men who did stupid things do?"
We KNOW what they all did. Therein lies the difference between the honorable men who did stupid things and DEMOCRATS.
That is the kinda of stuff that should be played over and over all over the internet. The internet is a great equalizer against the msm.
This guy is unreal! He says he is apologizing, and he turns around and insults the military even MORE! YES! KEEP TALKING SKERRY! lol!! This is unreal, is anyone else noticing this??
Read this thing...
"Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq. Just ask President Bush."
One could assume he is referring Bush, but that can`t be as Bush went to Harvard earning an MBA, and intellectually lazy? I don`t think so.. I would hardly call a guy who has an MBA from Harvard who gets off his arse every day to jog "intellectually lazy"... So one could only take this current comment by SKerry as another dig at our military. What he is saying is "Our military is stupid and they got us stuck in Iraq and Bush knows this."
Does'nt sound like an apology to me.
You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you tell botched jokes and ruin your party's election chances.
Wow! A defiant "apology." The media will redefine anything.
He reminds me of Benny Hill when he does that.
That's one of the funniest things I've ever seen on FR, and I've been around since way back in the Nineties.
And This:

"Former Democratic Sen. Max Cleland of Georgia, who lost both legs and an arm while serving in Vietnam, said, "The Republicans are so desperate that they'll take anything and try to make the most of it.""
They pull out Max Cleland, who was going for a drink when he picked up a grenade which blew up and caused his injuries. He may have been drunk (or was fragged).
Max Cleland is not a very good source of support, imo.
"That's one of the funniest things I've ever seen on FR, and I've been around since way back in the Nineties."
The thanks goes to Dead for his instant creativity yesterday.
Earlier Wednesday, Sen. John Kerry, a Massachusetts Democrat and 2004 presidential contender, became the first member of the Senate to suggest Lott was now unfit to lead the upper chamber. "It saddens me greatly to suggest this, but in the interests of the Senate, his party, and the nation, I believe Trent Lott should step aside as majority leader," Kerry said. "I simply do not believe the country can today afford to have someone who has made these statements again and again be the leader of the United States Senate."
Is this where your double-standard kicks in, Mr. Kerry?
It won't mean JACK SQUAT, because the only reason he'll be apologizing is because he's being FORCED to!
If he does, just watch the media try and back his sorry ass up as if he were really sincere!
Is there a search party out looking for his punchline?
Skerry now has two things to apologize for. The slur against our troops and his lie to try and cover it up.
