MEMPHIS Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Harold Ford Jr. issued a statement this morning calling on U.S. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., to apologize for comments that Republicans including President Bush contend disparage U.S. troops in Iraq.
Whatever the intent, Senator Kerry was wrong to say what he said, Rep. Ford said. He needs to apologize to our troops.
But Rep. Ford, who served as an honorary co-chairman of Sen. Kerrys 2004 failed presidential bid, said that the senators words dont alter the fact that the stay-the-course strategy pursued by President Bush and supported by Bob Corker isnt working. We need a new direction in Iraq. I know how hard our troops work, and the sacrifices they make, for our freedoms. They deserve a plan for victory as good as they are, and as senator I intend to see they get one.

Algore and Jim Sasser were Blue Dog Democrats untill they got into the Senate.
If anyone wants a good laugh, I'd advise to go to Daily Kos and see the dozen diaries whining about Ford and hoping he loses. Its friggin hilarious!
Right now I'd be happy ratcheting up the paranoia over at DU. Not to give them too much credit but they are the voice for what many on the far left are thinking.

I didn't know that - but it makes sense. My view of Clinton is that there was a period of time in his adolescence where he must have been watching film of John F. Kennedy at his press conferences like a football coach running game films, over and over again. Clinton absorbed the affectations and cadence, and some of the mannerisms of JFK - to the point of believing he was part of the family (witness him horning in during the sailing trip at Hyannis Port during the early days of his presidency). He had enough intelligence to put a nice gloss on it - but in the results of his administration you can see that Clinton is a highly defective person. Certainly no leader. Slick, but not someone who should be entrusted with power.
Ford hits me in exactly the same place. He has that kind of Tavis Smiley slickness that doesn't quite fool you, but convinces a lot of people.
I note that Ford is a U of Michigan Law School graduate and that he failed the Tennessee Bar the one time he took it. I'd like to see some statistics on U of M Law grads and their bar pass rate (either class of '96, all classes, average over past decade, etc.) It seems to me that he is a rarity in that failure, and that is may lend credence to the idea that he was either a celebrity, legacy, or affirmative action acceptance.
I expect to see him lose by about 1.5 pts. I'll spit up a lot more than coffee if he beats Corker. The lesson of Clinton is that opportunistic, narcissistic personalities like Clinton should be figuratively killed at birth within the world of politics. If Ross Perot hadn't entered the race in 1992, Clinton would be a long winded, hard to remember lawyer from Arkansas. That kind of mistake should not be repeated in giving Ford a step up in his career.

It is obvious to anyone with half a brain that it was not intended to be a joke directed to Bush. The context makes that clear. It was a speech to a bunch of students, and the remarks about education would make no sense if directed at Bush, who went to Yale and Harvard. His remarks were written down, and I note he has not offered a written copy of his speech. So, he must think we are all as stupid as he thinks the soldiers in Iraq are. Yet the "go-along" GOPers are willing to accept the "joke" explanation, and move on, instead of examining Kerry's congenital hatred of the military and American power abroad generally.
Harold Ford, Jr. is totally insincere. He is simply jumping on the WE'RE MAD AT JOHN SKERRY bandwagon so that he (Ford) doesn't look like the American military hating shmuck that he is. Ford, Jr. is definitely his father's son.
We had better hope that the difference in percentage points is huge or you will hear the sound of racism like you have never heard before. Especially from Harold Sr.
Seems like a pretty safe tactic to pick up a few votes.
Ford himself must apologize for being a moron - didn't he say something a couple days ago, to the effect that AUSTRALIA is a potential nuclear-weapons threat?
For what its worth, I read a post on here that said Ford was defending Kerry last night on the radio.
I say a day late & a dollar short!
Good info billhilly, thanks
Good info billhilly, thanks
We need to have a transcript of him defending Kerry..
From this link:
Ford Jr. insults TN soldiers again The lightweight Congressman visited Carroll County and again referred to soldiers in Iraq as "oil cops" (via Bill Hobbs). The first time he made that derogatory statement I thought he was throwing a little red meat to anti-military Democrats. However, if he's using that phrase while visiting with newspaper editors it's a core part of his message. I'm no mathematical genius but I know how many people from Tennessee are in Iraq right now. And they all have families. That's a lot of votes Ford figures he can do without. Perhaps he's not so "bright, articulate and capable" after all.
AMEN! Ford is vacuous Zelig. He will pretend to be whatever he thinks can get him elected. Should he ever get elected to the Senate or some other higher office, he will immediately set his sights on the Presidency.
YOU NAILED IT!!!
I read the church was only about 3/4 full. If true shows how low Clinton is dropping in the South at least.
Much to my chagrin....although I didn't predict that he wouldn't be "MAN" enough to say it in person.
Remember his speech yesterday??
There were several references about how he was going to be THE MAN..
riiiiiiiiiiiiight...
