Guild authorizes strike at Philadelphia Inquirer, Daily News

Members of the Newspaper Guild of Greater Philadelphia voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike against the new owner of the city's two biggest newspapers.

An estimated 500 of the union's 1,000 members who work for The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News attended a Guild meeting Thursday where leaders talked about how little progress has been made in negotiations.

...

The key issues are a proposal to freeze contributions to the Guild's pension plan and take over control of the pension fund, and a demand that the company be able to lay off employees without regard to seniority.

Last week, management told employees that layoffs are unavoidable because advertising revenue is down and the owners need to cut costs to meet bank obligations. Cash flow fell from $100 million in 2004 to $76 million last year and is projected to dip below $50 million for 2006.

A few thoughts...

1. Haha

2. I just heard on the radio - this strike is going to happen tomorrow (11/1/06)

3. Just 7 days before an election. Now how will the liberal Philadelphia Inquirer give FREE support to the liberal candidates of SE Pennsylvania? This must be driving the employees at the paper nuts.

4. This paper is losing circulation like crazy.

5. It was just bought out by a somewhat conservative group. They said they were not going to change the editorial staff – so they got even MORE liberal.

6. The unions will strike and drive this paper into oblivion. Good.

7. Haha

8. Just like the Iran-Iraq War - I hope it goes on for a long time (at least 7 days).

Can you still have a strike when you're laid off?

The print media feels the ongoing, dribbling effect of being called "drive by media".
Drive by is synonymous with superficiality, spin, partiality.
Such sticks with readers both former and current.
Lay offs are directly related to customers rejecting dished up partiality.

Support the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin instead - it is as conservative as any paper you'll ever find.

As in the American auto industry, for large newspapers, unions spur financial decline by demanding excessive wage hikes and sclerotic management practices as the price of labor peace. In the long term, liberalism's alliance with unions is a suicide pact effected by slow poisoning.
