It's worth noting that the AUDIENCE who witnessed John Kerry's original statement weren't confused or taken aback by the "muffed joke". They were laughing and applauding like he had actually said something clever and funny.
If the words that came out of Kerry's mouth were SO off the mark, you'd think someone would have stood up in outrage. "Senator! Surely you don't mean that the rank and file TROOPS who bravely voluteered for the armed forces are uneducated rubes. You must have meant George W Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, the NeoCon Conspiracy, Tony Snow, Rush Limbaugh and The Right Wing Attack Machine. As you know, we democrats hold the troops in the highest regard and would never want it to be construed that we look down upon them simply because they chose to risk their lives for the liberty that we all enjoy."
But, no. The words that exited Kerry's mouth MADE PERFECT SENSE to all who were there. Which just goes to show what a MASTER JOKE TELLER John Kerry is. Any other comedian, they muff a joke, the whole audience knows they muffed the joke. But when Kerry muffs a joke, the audience laughs and gives him a standing ovation.

nevergiveup (728 posts) Tue Oct-31-06 07:05 PM Response to Original message 8. What was Kerry possibly thinking? His initial statement was a political disaster and the press will run with this for days. I am trying my best to someway turn this into something positive but can't think of a way.
This administration was politically starving 7 days before the election and Kerry threw them a bone. Damn, I almost crashed my car when hearing this on the radio.

Kerry didn't misspeak, he was trying to insult the President, by insulting the troops. It's as simple as that. Kerry's an idiot, that much was clear after the presidential debates, and re-inforced when it was revealed that what Kerry was trying to hide in service records was the fact that his college grades and service test scores were lower than Bush's.

Seems pretty darn clear to me. Yes, he said, "Let's talk about education." Not, and by the way, "Let's talk about the president." Excellent. Until Dems decide what the meaning of 'is' is, they have no right to talk about context.

"His condescending attitude toward 'dumb' hunters on display in 2004."
Kerry's Goosecapade?
He is too freaking stupid to know that when he thinks he is "stepping down" to the level of the "unwashed masses" he is dealing with those much more intelligent than himself.

Peach, I have contact with hundreds of military every day and I can tell you the majority are either engaged now in furthering their education or have already completed it with higher degrees than kerry could ever wish for. They've also completed these accomplishments while serving full time as the countries protectors.

But this isn't first degree or even second degree attacking the troops. He meant Bush. He was (foolishly) joking about Bush's intelligence, hoping his audience wasn't aware of his own sad academic record.
The audience laughed and applauded. Nobody stood up and said "please Senator, you couldn't have just meant that the way it sounded. As you know, we Democrats hold the military in the highest regard. For the love of God, please tell us that it was a muffed joke!"
***
With that said, I agree that we should get this ugly episode past us as soon as possible so we can get on with the honest debate and important campaign issues about how all Republicans are gay child molestors who want to kill old people so they can give tax breaks to lobbyists from oil companies who destroy the environment so that women, minorities and immigrants will suffer because Jesus told them to, according to the pornographic novels written by the Vice President's wife.

FNC Panel:
Michael Barone: The obvious meaning of his words was something that was derogatory about the character and quality of the troops, and inaccurately derogatory.
Brit: [Kerry] did call it a botched joke about the Bush admministration.
Fred: What was the joke?
Brit: Well, there was a ripple of laughter in the audience after he made the comment about, you know, if you don't do your homework and you're not smart, you get stuck in Iraq.
Fred: If it was a botched joke, then what did he mean to say? [snip] The words are pretty plain.

I'm kind of surprised the big guy would even respond to the puke scumball Kerry. When someone bends over with a "Kick Me" sign on their ass, you just gotta take a shot...

Hi, AmeriBrit. My stepson is in the military and has been in Iraq and wants to go back. He is 37 and has a wife and 3 year old daughter at home.
He's a smart kid and has his degree and tons of awards and medals and this country is damned lucky to have him and all the rest of our beloved military men and women.
And I hope Kerry rots in hell.

Even ABC news just quoted a Dem congressman saying Kerry couldn't keep from screwing up 2004 now he's doing it in 2006.
But hey, everyone is just not understanding Kerry but you.
