The eve of one of Poland's biggest holidays
31.10.2006
Halloween is the eve of one of the biggest Polish holidays All Saints Day and All Souls Day, devoted to remembering and honouring the dead.
Particularly November 1st is devoted nationwide to visiting cemeteries to light candles and lay flowers on the graves of loved ones and at sites commemorating events from Polish history.
The day is also an occasion for a special collection held by famous actors and public personalities to support a restoration fund for historic Polish cemeteries in and outside the country.

That is soooooo beautiful. Maybe we Americans could strive to make Halloween this kind of holiday. Restore it to it's original intent. Thanks for the pictures.

Um, the demonic version *is* the original intent. Google Samhain.
All Saints Day was the version the Catholic Church invented to 'christianize' the pagans.

the Poles are very devout. I see in certain Polish parishes they are very respectful in church, they genuflect upon entering, maintain silence and on Saturdays you actually see lines of people there for confession.

My great-uncle was a Polish Jesuit Priest from Stara Wies who spent time in Buchenwald, Aushwitz and many years interred in Dachau. He was released on liberation day. He went to Rome for a time, and then came to the USA to teach at Loyola. He was one of the lucky to have survived.
Thanks for posting that. :)
