PETE TOWNSHEND refused to let documentary maker MICHAEL MOORE use THE WHO's WON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN in his FAHRENHEIT 9/11 film because he didn't want the anthem to become an anti-PRESIDENT GEORGE W BUSH song. The rocker claims the tune has been misinterpreted many times and he didn't want to add to the confusion by letting Moore use the song against Bush. He tells Rolling Stone magazine, "When ROGER (DALTREY) sang it, suddenly it became almost an anthem of the counterculturalists. "You say to somebody, 'I'm not doing it,' and they hear you say, 'I'm doing it.' Like, 'I'm not going to tell you President Bush is a bad man.' And people go, 'Oh, OK, so President Bush is a bad man.' Let me tell you again, 'He f**king is not a f**king bad man, you f**king idiot!' "The debates I had back and forward through HARVEY WEINSTEIN (producer) with MICHAEL MOORE were beyond belief. He wanted to use my song Won't Get Fooled Again. "I said to Harvey, 'The guy wants to misuse the misuse of the song.' It's not political or partisan or parochial." The rock anthem is now the theme to TV hit CSI: MIAMI.
I never bought that, and I don't buy it now.
I saw the Who a few days after Entwistle passed away. Ringo's son is a solid drummer.
If I call you a pedophile, does that make you one?
Some people think it does, you among them.
Pedophile? Not quite. He was arrested, investigated, and cleared of all charges.
Townshend Charge Dropped
No child porn downloads found on seized computer
Augustin Sedgewick, Rolling Stone, May 7, 2003
After an investigation that lasted nearly four months, police in London cleared Pete Townshend yesterday on charges that he downloaded child porn from the Internet. Computer equipment seized by officials from Scotland Yard at the time the Who guitarist's arrest in January failed to turn up any illicit downloads, police said. Investigators did confirm that Townshend had accessed a site containing such images in 1999; as a result, he was listed on a national register of sex offenders.
"From the very beginning," Townshend said in a statement, "I acknowledged that I did access this site and that I had given the police full access to my computers. As I made clear at the outset, I accessed the site because of my concerns at the shocking material available on the Internet to children as well as adults, and as part of my research toward the campaign I had been putting together since 1995 to counter damage done by all kinds of pornography on the Internet, but especially any involving child abuse."
Bravo Pete. The Who 'f**king' rock.
"Ringo's son is a solid drummer"
Not as good or crazy as Keith Moon!!!
Actually, no he's not. He proved the Jacko theory of celebrity culpability.
Perhaps I'm wrong.
BTW, the NY Yankees use "Won't Get Fooled Again" as their theme song when they take the field.
Since Pete did this to Moore, I'll have to shill for the Who's new album 'Endless Wire', on sale TODAY in the US. If it is as good as the 'Wire and Glass' EP, that's great for a couple of old geezers.
I don't think it does at all.
I apologize. Innocent until proven guilty...he said it was research and after the Michael Jackson fiasco, I guess I assumed it was a coverup. After the reaction of several fellow rock-and-roll freepers, I stand corrected unless I see actual proof.
In their investigation of the matter, the Crown was satisfied that he was not.
Thanks for the correction.
I can go back to liking Pete again. :-)
Won't Get Fooled Again
We'll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgement of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
The change, it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the fold, that's all
And the world looks just the same
And history ain't changed
'Cause the banners, they all flown in the last war
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
No, no!
I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
For I know that the hypnotized never lie
Do ya?
Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
There's nothing in the street
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Is now the parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!
Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss
He cooperated fully with investigators, so IMO he wasn't trying to cover up anything.
Yeah, that's it. Sort of like someone who gets caught hauling bags of cash out of a bank vault was just going about getting a loan in the wrong way...
Nooooooooooo. I didn't mean to imply that. But remember it was Kenney Jones whom he replaced.
LOL. His version of, "you're stuck on stupid".
I liked Pete's 80s solo albums, especially Chinese Eyes and White City, more than the most recent Who stuff, but I'm looking forward to the new stuff.
