A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

No pumpkin pic, but a short, very good, film on YouTube - The Life and Death of a Pumpkin: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Q-1aui-wluE

The film is clean, can't vouch for whatever advertising might be around it on YouTube.

Living in the woods, I don't get trick-or-Treaters. I'm teaching art class as usual.

ohhh Billie.. I love that one! Did not see it before. You probably don't have many trick/treaters either ... I think it is a shame things have changed so much from the times we were kids. We never had to worry about sickos putting needles, razor blades OR drugs in our haul. It was great to get homemade popcorn balls, candied or Carmel apples or cookies..

I cannot buy the tinned pumpkin in Ashford or at least the stores in Ashford I go to.

So my only option is fresh, cannot comment on taste difference as have only tasted tinned once when a friend of mine who visits the States often on business made a pumpkin pie with it. It was lovely from memory but cannot remember the difference to the fresh if any in taste.

I can buy Libby's over the internet but with postage that gets very expensive so a pumpkin that cost about 1.80 dollars and gives me about 6 cups seems fairly cost effective - what are the prices in the US like?

I guess I should feel some kind of connection to witches at Halloween, since I recently found out that a second cousin has traced our family tree and has documented a direct line back to the Towne sisters, who were accused as witches in Salem. Seems my 9th generation great grandmother was Mary Towne Esty, hanged as a witch on September 22nd, 1692.

I recently watched the DVD "Three Sovereigns for Sarah", the PBS documentary about the Towne sisters and the witch hunts in Salem. Vanessa Redgrave does a wonderful job playing Sarah (the only accused sister who wasn't hanged) and Kim Hunter plays my grt, grt....grandmother, Mary. It is a moving story that will stay with you long after you watch it. It illustrates what can happen when mass hysteria grips a town. Thank God we live in more enlightened times.

You can buy canned (tin) pumpkin here for 99 cents for a fairly large can (enough for one pie)... The pumpkins I have seen this year are about 5 dollars or more. THey are big & would do a lot of pies.

I would guess 95% of the pumpkins sold around here are for ornamental purposes

A local studio has classrooms and a few years ago, as an artist, I was drafted by The Tuesday night adult class when they lost their teacher.

wow, I will have to try to find & view that movie.. how sad your grandma was killed - those were crazy times..

But maybe not so crazy in perspective..

Now we kill our unborn babies.. In centuries ahead (if the world is still around) I would hope that people would be shaking their heads wondering how abortion could have been condoned,in the same way we look at the witch hunts.
