Whether it was a teenage prank or a political ploy, homeowner Shaun Jones videotaped someone taking campaign signs from his front yard on Northwest 87th Terrace early Monday morning.
"That's the only one they bothered," Jones told KMBC's Natalie Moultrie.
The video showed a group taking all 11 of his "Vote No on Amendment 2" signs.
"What have I done other than say this is what I feel, what I believe and how I'm going to vote?" Jones said.
Jones said it is the second time in a week someone has taken his signs. After the first sign disappeared, Jones set up his surveillance camera.
"It's kind of humorous. Part of me wanted to catch them and say, 'Hey, stop acting childish, vote the way you want to vote,'" Jones said.
But what you can't see on the tape is that whoever took the signs also decorated Jones' front tree with toilet paper and knocked over a flower pot on the front porch, Moultrie reported.
Jones said that other "vote no" signs in his neighborhood disappeared overnight as well.
"It was a calculated effort. They came to canvass the neighborhood and take signs away from people who want to speak out about an issue," Jones said.
Jones has replaced the stolen signs.
"I didn't want them to take my signs. I want to be able to vote and speak out this way. I feel like that's been taken away from me," Jones said.
Jones said he is giving a copy of his surveillance tape to police since taking political signs from someone's front yard is considered stealing personal property.
In western PA, a Republican candidate's sign was slashed and smeared with dog poop.
An anti-Santorum bumper sticker I've seen says "DUMPRICK"--all one word. Look at the double meaning. Real class acts, the Democrats.
I guess it's time for this sort of thing.. sheesh...
Last time Barbara Boxer ran for Senate, there was only one Boxer sign in my whole town in conservative Orange County. It was a bad xerox, and stapled to a phone pole on a public sidewalk.
I was driving by and pulled over and took it down. My son was horrified. "You stole that!". "No, I'm taking out the trash. Yhe Boxer campaign doesn't own the phone pole."
Jones could put it up on YouTube and see if anyone recognizes the thieves...
I know a guy who broke his arm while tearing down a Kerry sign in '04. He was running back to the car and tripped in a ditch. Tearing down signs is so lame, I even told him so.
The only McCaskill and "yes on 2" signs in our neighborhood are in front of the gay guy's house. Nobody else seems to want to hop on board. I'm in no big rush to see them taken down, either.
You don't mention what Amendment 2 is, but I assume that the perp was a Rat, as is overwhelmingly usual.
As a rule of thumb; if I have to shove it into 4WD to run over a sign, I don't bother.
Agreed. I live in Massachusetts, and every day for the past three years, I have to drive past this house that has on the front lawn a "Support the Troops; Bring them Home Now" sign, replete with the socialist dove with twig in beak thing. The losers have a flagpole on their house that has, variously, a peace sign, the UN flag, and now has (for some unknown reason) the state insignia of Massachusetts on a white background.
As much as I have to resist the urge to drive over the sign, or kick it over, I would not do it, because I believe in Freedom of Speech. No matter how misguided or stupid, it is their right.
Besides, I know that defacing the sign would make me a liberal.
LOL...that's great!
I say leave the signs alone as leftist campaign signs warn me as to where morons live.

Ammendment 2 on the Missouri ballot is a 3300 word Constitutional Ammendment that cements any type of embryonic stem cell research into the Missouri Constitution while simultaneously prohibiting any local or state government from ever having oversight of said research. This is the Michael J. Fox thing that he failed to actually read before endorsing, as well as campaigning for our Dem opponent to the Honorable Jim Talent. It is an abomination.
Sorry, I just assumed.
Heheh...
In some states you can be fined for attaching a sign to a telephone pole.
Suggest FReepers carry video and/or digital cameras with them if possible through the next several weeks. I caught RATs doing campaign-related pranks in my neighborhood as well, and got their car license plate numbers and then threatened to report them to the State Board of Elections.
During the CA recall of 2003, I had several "Join Arnold" signs swiped. I took a fellow FReeper's advice and coated the next few with Vaseline. They disappeared also, but hopefully they ruined some clothing and car interiors in the process.
