The British consulate in Basra will evacuate its heavily defended building in the next 24 hours over concerns for the safety of its staff.Despite a large British military presence at the headquarters in Basra Palace, a private security assessment has advised the consul general and her staff to leave the building after experiencing regular mortar attacks in the last two months.
The move will be seen as a huge blow to progress in Iraq and has infuriated senior military commanders. They say it sends a message to the insurgents that they are winning the battle in pushing the British out of the southern Iraqi capital, where several British soldiers have died and dozens have been injured.

The commanders are correct. There will be rejoicing in the streets.

Damn...this is not good.
Where is the true British spirit when you need it?
I think it's time for Shock and Awe II!
God speed to your son too! He's a truely great American!
5 bucks says this changes.

12 Profound Minutes

[Major John]
The Army provides a 12 minute explanation of "Boots on the Ground." I just left a meeting of several hundred Illinois Army National Guard Soldiers a few hours ago. When this film clip was shown, there was stone silence when it ended. A profound message for those of us who have been given the honor, the privilege, and the responsibility to leader Soldiers.

Maybe if Saddam had tried to kill Blair's daddy the Brits be more willing to bankrupt themselves forcing democracy onto people who don't want it.
Thank you...this article upset me cause he's in this area..
Hey, I didn't know Bill Maher posted on FR.
Neither Britain nor the US has the power to "force" democracy in the Middle East. All we can do is offer it to the people as our Plan A. If this doesn't work and terrorism against the civilized world continues, then we'll use Plan B: do as many Dresdens as it takes to make them surrender unconditionally.
Stiff upper lip has been replaced with political correctness.
I couldn't get the video to play on the Army video page (probably my browser setup), but it played with this URL:

What a really profound, in depth analysis. Oh, wait they were the Democraps 2004 talking points--never mind.
then we'll use Plan B: do as many Dresdens as it takes to make them surrender unconditionally.
...
Which should have been Plan A.
A dedicated enemy will never reciprocate the consideration of sparing his family while trying to kill him.
He will see that as a sign of weakness and indecision..
It appears our politicians have the will to risk our warriors in a politically correct and dangerous ROE environment -- but not the will to kill the enemy in LARGE numbers....laying waste to vast areas that support the enemy.
Semper Fi
specifically target the firebrand clerics and immans, give the people time to add 2 + 2 together without getting fired up
