I'd like to know, too. It's not apparent from the WaPo articles.

It's been nuts in DC - this is a college for the Deaf, and the students decided she wasn't 'deaf enough' to be their Dean, and they have been protesting for weeks, including hunger strikes.

There ya go. I was just going to say that she wasn't deaf enough. She had the nerve to think it was acceptable for a deaf person to use her voice to speak.

How asinine. So the only good Dean is a deaf Dean?

I knew they were demonstrating etc., but didn't know why until your reply. Does this set the hispanics and the deaf against each other?

Why did she pi$$ off the students?

Her problem is that she's not a full bore life-long deaf person and the vocal protesters against her appointment are bigots. In their world she is a half-breed. They have made up just about every other excuse for not wanting her, but it started with her not being one of them.

It has been my experience that deaf people are very militant about their deafness.

Yes, they are militant. Some will not communicate with a deaf person who has undergone a cochlear implant. I don't understand it.

Certainly some deaf people have made a sort of "deaf pride" doctrine according to which deafness is not a handicap, it's just a difference. It is an ideological division. As someone with a very mild "difference" -- I'm red/green colorblind -- it just seems silly to me. I know I miss things because of a lack of the ability to make certain distinctions (drop a tool dipped in that red plastic stuff in green grass, and I'm not going to find it) and I'm sure that deaf people miss stuff that hearing people don't miss -- important stuff.

Sure seems like a handicap to me.

The deaf zealots have a strong animosity for those who are not deaf and can be openly hostile to parents who would seek cochlear implants for their deaf children. We had a similar ousting at our state school for the deaf.

The students sound kinda Bolshie and separatist to me. Why shouldn't they learn to use both sign and vocal speech if they can?

In other news, the school is now seeking out other candidates who are more deaf than Ms. Fernandes. The shortlist includes Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, and Keith Richards.
