Saddam lawyer warns Bush over trial verdict (Saddam campaigns for Democrats)

Saddam Hussein's defence team has drafted a letter to US President George W. Bush warning of dire consequences if an Iraqi court issues a verdict against the ousted Iraqi president for crimes against humanity.

In a copy of the letter received by AFP in Jordan on Sunday, lead Iraqi lawyer Khalil al-Dulaimi also urged Bush to set free Saddam and put an end to the trial which he described again as illegal and a farce.

"We believe that it is necessary to stop this farcical trial and set free President Saddam Hussein, and all the prisoners, because this is the only solution for your troops and your difficult position in Iraq," Dulaimi said.

"This is also the best way for the future of Iraq, the region and the world," he added.

In a separate letter by Saddam himself, addressed to the court's presiding judge, the ousted president also called for the verdict against him not to be pronounced on November 5, just two days before the US midterm elections.

Saddam warned that such timing would reinforce Bush's Republican party in the elections. "The propaganda machine will seek to show that Bush has achieved his strategic goal" in Iraq, he said.

This, he said, will influence voters who have not taken sides over the war in Iraq and tip the vote in favour of Republicans to the detriment of their Democratic rivals who have become more critical of US involvement in Iraq.

He should have been hung one week after the trial started. The Iraqi Government is beginning to look like a joke. They are under heavy attacks by the same insurgents that hopes that Saddam will be released. I would doubt the lame silly jackasses with no ba##s will cave in.

I wonder how proud the Dems are at such an endorsement, and who will cover the fact they've gotten it!

Since Saddam is not dead yet it would not surprise me if he were set free and restored to the presidency. Probably as part for a peace settlement engineered by a Democrat US president and congress.

Best to put a bullet in his head ASAP.

How's about we bundle Saddam onto a C-130 and whisk him off to Diego Garcia but, part-way there, "free him" somewhere over the Indian ocean.

BTW, National Geographic is having a special on Saddam tonight.

Brian Wilson mentioned it on Fox this morning.

Be forewarned, it is graphic.

Too bad he just can't get shot during an "escape attempt".

He'll be found guilty. Unlike the trial, I suspect the appeals process will not be lengthy.

Although a conviction on Nov. 4, 2006 and a date with the headsman about Nov. 1, 2008, would be convenient, I suspect Saddam will lose his head somewhat before then.

I'm sure a US Court would rule that putting him on a C-130 was "cruel and unusual", never mind the thousands of US GI's that have ridden them. Put him on a C-17 or C-5, much more comfortable ... until he tries to escape out the jump door. :)

Al-Dulaimi has said that if Saddam is condemned to death in a separate trial, where he is charged with killing nearly 150 people from the town of Dujail, it could provoke civil war in Iraq and unrest throughout the Middle East.
