Emirates cancels order for 10 Airbus A340 planes (AFP)

LONDON - Emirates airline has cancelled an order for 10 long-range Airbus A340-600 planes plus the option of 10 more, its president Tim Clark told reporters gathered at Heathrow airport on Friday.

Clark said the decision had been taken because the Dubai-based carrier believed the A340 lacked the technology offered by more up-to-date planes.

He added that the order had been taken up by a third party.

Was it the Emirates or another Sheikhdom that just finished building a new airlines terminal specially designed to accomodate that much delayed airbus giant?

This isn't the A380. It is the largest version of the A340 which competes against the 777-300ER and is touted as a one for one replacement for 747-100 and 747-200 aircraft except that they aren't as fast as 747's.

I think you are referring to the A380, the big plane that is having delay after delay.

The A340 is supposed to compete with the Boeing 777 long range plane. That they say that the A340 can't compete is another nail in their coffin.

As the French emotionally discuss this lo$$, I wouldn't be surprised if most of their conversation went like this, "excuse my French" but ... "excuse my French" but ... .

No, I think it means that their order has been taken over by someone else, i.e. someone bought their slots in line.

These were the top-of-the-line Airbus other than the A380, the A340-600 HGW (high gross weight) model. It's a stretched A340 designed for higher max takeoff weights, I assume that either it carries extra fuel or it's built for extra payload. It's a development of the original A340 models, the -200 and the longer -300; bigger engines, mainly, to give it a lot more power. The A340-500, a shorter version, was the longest-ranged jetliner in service until the Boeing 777-200LR Worldliner dethroned it.

The A340-600 is one huge airplane...it's weird proportionally because it's so darn long. It looks longer than a 747-400, but I don't know that it is, that may be an illusion of the rounder single-deck fuselage.

Yeah, the -600 is like a flying pencil. A very weird, but really nice plane.

It's supposedly the longest airliner around-ahead of the 747-400 by 4 metres or so.

This isn't really news and shouldn't surprise anybody.

Sales of the A340 which is a fuel guzzling dinosaur dropped off the radar long ago.

Old orders being canceled were the next logical step.

A nice plane, had occasion to fly a brand new one on SIA. Very stable, quiet, but alas 4 engines means it can't compete with a 777.

But just a couple of months ago there was talk of Emirates converting the A340 orders to A380 orders. That would have increased Emirates A380 orders to 55. Apparently that isn't going to happen now.

Really? What do you think will be their second choice?
