Spinach E. coli strain found in wild pig gut and water from creek [Rolleyes]
The San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Friday, October 27, 2006

Investigators searching for the source of E. coli bacteria that contaminated fresh spinach resulting in a 26-state outbreak of food poisoning have found the suspect strain in the gut of a wild pig killed on the Salinas Valley ranch where the tainted produce was grown.

The same strain of E. coli had already been found in cattle pastured on land surrounding the 50-acre spinach field. On Thursday, state officials said more samples of the strain were found: in the pig, in other cow manure samples, and in water from a creek located a mile downslope from that field.

Investigators had found evidence earlier that wild pigs had penetrated fencing built to keep wildlife out of the spinach field. There were tracks of the animals in the fields, where they had apparently been drawn to feast on the fresh greens.

Oh, but do the nearby cattle have the same germ?

Wild pigs will be the patsy for the public. Can't sue them.

Hmm, cattle drink water. Wild pigs drink water. Plants are irrigated with water. Nope, no pattern there.

It's cows ecoli that wild pigs transferred to spinach in the fields.. one theory proposed of late.

Not sure on how clean one can really get "fresh" spinach or the table considering how it is grown, harvested packaged and then distributed.

It's a very convenient "finding" isn't it?

Reilly said the three other farms are not close to the one where the implicated strain was found.

I knew there was a bacon of hope.

If feral pigs got into that field, there wouldn't be much left to pick. They don't call them PIGS for nothing.

See how easy this was to find? FBI tried running down anthrax for 5 years and couldn't find it.

It's hard to believe anthrax would be harder to trace and track than e-coli, but there it is.

Of course, this wasn't the FBI looking for it either! (ha ha ha ha ha ha ha)

No doubt the "fibbies" would have had 'em building a dam on that crick first so they could walk across without messing up their wingtips.

As long as we are conjecturing about the source of E. coli, has anyone checked the gut or spoor of illegal aliens working these crops?

Did the wild pigs contaminate the spinach field? Or did the wild pigs eat contaminated spinach? Chicken or egg?

"Did we see any mention of them testing the water?? "

We did, if we read the article. We saw them mention it twice...once in the headline, and once in the body.

Now, I don't know about wild pigs, but I do about domestic pigs. They eat. They crap. They do both at the same time.
