Majority believes government doing too much (MSM catatonia alert)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A quarter century after the Reagan revolution and a dozen years after Republicans vaulted into control of Congress, a new CNN poll finds most Americans still agree with the bedrock conservative premise that, as the Gipper put it, "government is not the answer to our problems -- government is the problem."

The poll released Friday also showed that an overwhelming majority of Americans perceive, correctly, that the size and cost of government have gone up in the past four years, when Republicans have had a grip on the House of Representatives, the Senate and the White House.

Discretionary spending grew from $649 billion in fiscal year 2001 to $968 billion in fiscal year 2005, an increase of $319 billion, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

Queried about their views on the role of government, 54 percent of the 1,013 adults polled said they thought it was trying to do too many things that should be left to individuals and businesses. Only 37 percent said they thought the government should do more to solve the country's problems.

Americans had a slightly different perspective when it came to the specific issue of promoting traditional values. A slight majority -- 51 percent -- said they thought that was an appropriate activity for government, while 43 percent said it should not favor any particular set of values.

Explains why we Republicans are so ticked with the Republicans in office: they are acting like Democrats.

Now, if only we could get some Republicans leaders who agree government is doing too much. Newt Gingrich was the last one with the cojones to stand up and say that. Who is the next Newt or Reagan?

Bingo. And that's precisely why RINO should never be rewarded with another term. Ever.

The size of government has gone up EVERY year, not just the past four.

So long as we keep (re-)electing RINOs, nobody.

Since when is not supporting RINOs equated with not supporting Republicans? In case you haven't noticed, the RINOs have been siding with the Dhimmicrats, not us. Duh??

The size of government has gone up EVERY year, not just the past four.

And that makes it okay?

There are two possible solutions:

1)tax everyone that votes, thereby giving them reason to control spending.

2)only let those that pay taxes vote.

In other words, there is no solution.

The American Sheeple say this and then they turn around and believe people that say Republicans want to cut Socialist Security, Medicare, education, etc. and then scream bloody murder when an effort is made to REFORM and not cut them at the very least.

And yet the (R)s continue to spend like drunken soldier. No wonder the base is tepid.

If it's a RINO over a dem he/she should be elected.

Even McCain votes pro-Bush on defense issues for example.

Sure, I would prefer a straight conservative, but I would definitely pull the lever for a RINO over Pelosi.

I don't believe Gov't is doing too much. I believe Gov't is trying to do too much and starting program after program rather than make existing programs work, and never stopping old programs whether they work or not. The result is that Gov't is actually doing very little but spending a lot of money in the process.

Has CNN mentioned how the deficit has been halved under Repub. rule yet?

While that is nice, it's not cutting it. The national debt has ballooned by nearly $3,000,000,000,000 the whole time we've had an allegedly Republican majority. Thanks to the spendthrift RINOs, our collective debt has gone from 5.6 trillion dollars to 8.5 trillion dollars in the past six years. (Source: U.S. Department of the Treasury)

So personally, I don't think halving the deficit means squat if we don't start demanding our Republican candidates behave like Republicans and start cutting expenditures and handouts.

I know a couple of retired couples who now vote Democrat in order to "protect" their social security. FDR knew what he was doing, alright.

Yes, but the deficit has been halved. And that does mean "squat".

In other words, if things continued this way, the deficit would be erased and we'd begin eating into the debt...which would be a significant achievement.
