Ohio voter ID law suspended

COLUMBUS - A federal judge on Thursday suspended Ohio's new voter identification law for early voting already under way, saying the state's 88 counties are inconsistently applying the rule for people filling out absentee ballots.

U.S. District Judge Algenon Marbley granted the temporary restraining order on behalf of labor and poverty groups who filed a lawsuit earlier in the week.

The ruling is in effect until Wednesday, when the judge will consider arguments from the same groups seeking to block application of the identification law for voters who go to the polls on Election Day.

Columnist Ruben Navarette recently asked the question: Whatever happened to all those hard-working decent folks who did not mind getting their hands dirty for modest wages, put in an honest day's work for an honest day's wage, brought their paychecks home to support their families, made their kids toe the line and brought them up to be the right kind of people?

He answered his own question by saying: Don't look now but they are coming up across our Southern border from Mexico.

God bless you and yours.

I don't think your negativism IS 'reality.'

That's why I called in Common Tator who just posted to me regarding this very subject. If he's not around to explain things to you, I'll just quote him.

There's more support for Blackwell than you know.

Here's one example.....

COLUMBUS POST ENDORSES BLACKWELL

COLUMBUS - Gubernatorial candidate Ken Blackwell yesterday received the endorsement of the Columbus Post, a prominent Central Ohio African-American newspaper.

The newspaper touted Blackwell's experience and bold solutions to Ohio's education and economic challenges.

"We endorse J. Kenneth Blackwell (R) who we believe has a greater sense of Ohio issues having served in an array of positions in local and state government including a stint as mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio state treasurer and secretary of state. He has some innovative ideas for school funding and job creation."

The newspaper also cited Blackwell's commitment to Ohio's African-American community.

"Throughout the years, Blackwell has stayed close to the black community and convinced skeptics with his arguments that he did not suppress the black vote in the 2004 election."

"As an entrepreneur, Blackwell turned around a struggling radio conglomerate and eventually sold it to black businesswoman Cathy Hughes of Radio One demonstrating a desire to support black businesses."

In addition, the Columbus Post questioned opponent Ted Strickland's lack of specific solutions to education, health care and jobs.

"Strickland speaks of his solutions in terms that are broad and voters are still unclear about his specific plans for education, health care and jobs. There is also the perception that Strickland's campaign has not been forceful enough in countering the aggressiveness of Blackwell's campaign in the black community, fostering suspicions that African-Americans' concerns will not be taken seriously."

Strickland is completely unqualified and at the extreme left. We have a week and a half, and that's a lifetime in politics.

Don't be discouraged by bogus polls and leftist tactics.

It takes just one rogue Federal judge to knock down a law approved by voters. Those immigration obsessed idiots, Buchanan/Lou dobbs supporters who are planning to sit down this election should understand what is at stake, the ability of the President to appoint constitutional judges to the Federal and Supreme court.

Look for a sweep?? LOL!

Looks more like the FR trolls (you?) are specifically targeting Ohio in this election. We must be REALLY important to the leftist cause.

This is quite a consistent pattern in the past couple of weeks....... and it hasn't gone unnoticed....

You know who the Columbus Post is don't you? Their ciruclation is insignificant. And their voice is not all that powerful anymore.

As for the polls, I've seen polls ebb and flow. Saw that in 2000 and 2004. With this race, the numbers only get worse as time goes by. http://realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2006/governor/oh/ohio_governor_race-5.html#polls Sure, there is a week and a half left. And you're right.....anything can happen. And for loyalists, I do urge don't give up. Stay with your man.

Of course, I can be the next lottery winner too!

Interested in a friendly wager. I'll donate $20.00 to your favorite charity if you are right and you'll donate $20.00 to mine. Mine is called Share IT! Link here if you want to check it out. http://www.shareittoday.org/

A plea to Freepers~
Perhaps if we E-mail or Fax or call Brit Hume, Bill O'riley
Fox news, as well as Radio Station Host that are friends to Conservatives & fair play. They will at least alert the public to this disgrace.
On my local news and in my local paper not one word of this outrage has been reported. My guess is the DBM want this to slip under the radar. The left knows 90% of American voters do agree with ID voting. Hence, they plan to sneak in another "win" for Democrats by using the Black Plague i.e. Activist Judges.

Here's Tator's comments from another thread.........(with your permission, Tator??)

The turn out in mid term elections is generally quite lite when compared to presidential elections. For example in 2005 the total turn out was 5.7 million compared to 2002 when the turn out was 3.4 million. The turnout was 2.8 million for Bush and 2.7 million for Kerry in 2004 compared to 1.8 million for Taft and 1.3 million for the Democrat in 2002.

That means we will likely win every race if we can turn out the Republican voters in 2006 like we did in 2004.

It is unlikely that the Democrats will turn out more than 1.8 or 1.9 million in 2006. The Republicans will need to turn out 2 million or better to be assured of winning the race.

It is likely that there are no mare than 1.5 million swing voters in Ohio. If we get all of our base out and even if the swing voters go 2 to 1 against us, we can still win. We just have to get most of the base to the polls to vote.

But I am not sure the swing vote moderates will go 2 to 1 against us. With the economy good and this years campaigns so nasty I think lots of swing voters will stay home.

Yes the swing voters have voted in the last 4 elections. And they will tend to tell pollsters they will vote this year. But historically when races are as negative as this years races they tend to say fie on both your houses and stay home.

If they do we may surprise some media people and lots of pollsters. If a significant number of moderates stay home and our base comes out to vote we may pull it out yet.

btw, optimism is not a disease, joe.

I was optimistic against all odds in 2000. I was optimistic in 2002. And I was unfailingly optimistic.....especially about Ohio.......in 2004.

My track record is pretty good. :)

I'm not talking about the circulation. I'm talking about the position of the paper, and the fact that it is NOT the traditional conservative base.

There's more of that 'out there.' It's just not making the papers OR the polls.

And I'll think about the wager. I don't usually bet on anything, ever, but I just might do it this one time. :)

I don't either. But if your cause is good, I have no problem supporting it. For full disclosure, I've given you a link to mine. It's not one anyone from either side of the aisle could have trouble with. I don't look at it as a bet in the traditional sense. More in the line of one of our charities will get a few extra bucks.

Wager is you believe Blackwell will win. I say he won't.

PS, glad you're a good sport.

Also, you didn't resond to my comments on how Secretary Blackwell looked at the last debate. Again, I only saw the final questions, but he did look very uncomfortable. Like he wasn't feeling well.

YEs it has been. But there are a lot of negatives to overcome this election.

Your winning streak may continue. I just don't see it.

I watched the whole debate, and I thought he was strong. I have no idea how it would have looked to come in only at the end.

He was articulate and forceful and kept pounding the Strickland NAMBLA thing, and Strickland came across as a sleazy televangelist.

I haven't heard any other commentary on it, but I'd give Blackwell the clear win on it...........but then I'm an optimist. :)

btw, so is Ken. He just stopped by our local VICTORY CENTER, and he was pumped and very optimistic. He's a winner, for sure.

It troubles me to see such serious issues being reduced to a FR bet.
As the mother of a son serving in the US Navy, I get emotional at what appears to be a cavalier attitude about such serious stakes.
I try not to get overly dramatic, but I fear Democrats in power much more than the Iraq War. (seriously)

There must be government assistance for those who claim they don't have the money for the ID

They don't have to pay for anything, utility bills, bank statements, gov't checks... anything that match's the name & address on the voter roll is being accepted.

First let me say thank you to your son for his service. My son served in the Navy also.

Secondly, thank you for raising a son who saw military service as something so important. Also, thank you for your sacrifice. Having a son away from home and potentially in harms way is indeed a parental sacrifice.

Finally, if this was a "bet" that either of us pocketed, I would wholely agree. But I'm suggesting a contribution to a very worthy charity. I donate generously independently as well as thorugh payroll deduction to this charity. It is run by an evangelical Christian.

Finally, the results of the election will be what they will be. I'm thrilled with neither of them. I would probably be more comfortable with Secretary Blackwell were it not for his relationship with Pastor Parsley. But I don't believe that Strickland will turn Ohio into a vast wasteland. Frankly, the republicans have done a pretty good job of that since they have been in power the past 16 years.

If we have a republican controled house and senate, there isn't too much Strickland can do to hurt us.

Okay. The argument in some places is that a drivers license ID costs money some can't afford. Fine, I'll chip in for that if it keeps a couple million illegal aliens from voting.

It takes a picture ID to cash a check, give blood, get on a plane, drive a car or open a bank account. It takes two forms of id to get a job or use an employee discount. Why is voting on the honor system?
