Frankly, manners and protocol are something we could use a lot more of, in this increasingly rude world.

Oh yea! Well you can kiss my....

Just kidding, I agree we can use more manners, some folks removing other peoples heads without permission for example. But I don't see why elected politicians get to drag around monikers that they no longer have any right to.

OK, I'll go along with this for now but if it gets out of hand I may insist it be stopped. /s off

Kerry was a highly decorated vet, too. Webb the Pervert is a democrat trying to unseat a republican. Therefore, ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING THAT CAN BE IMAGINED BY ANY HUMAN BEING can and should be done to the pervert. He is an active member of the party of treason and probably fantasizes about orally servicing UBL -- that's what dems do -- they worship fervently and passionately any and all of American's enemies. If the Almighty Himself were to descend from the heavens this very moment and reveal that Webb The Sick Pervert had indeed witnessed this scene, I would still want it used against him and would hope that that was THE SPECIFIC REASON for his loss, as this would cause him the most agony -- knowing he lost a senate seat for truthfully writing what he saw. That would be exquisite.

Webb says I saw it, it happened, author has a duty to write about it, there was nothing sexual about it . . .

. . . yet you did nothing to stop it. You stood there clutching an M-16 while watching a man sexually assault a young boy, and you did nothing to stop it. Nice.

I remember when things like that were a political career-ender, but those days seem to be over, with a two-time divorce' running against a one-time divorce'.

I could be wrong about what Mark said, but that's what I remember. Here's what factcheck.org says (all I've been able to find so far except Jim's web site and wikipedia). Sounds like he and Carlucci weren't too happy w each other so maybe it was a 'mutual decision' that he leave:

Multiply by Four
The announcer tells us that Webb "served in the Reagan administration. After 10 months, he quit." This misstates Webb's service. He actually joined the administration in 1984, when he was nominated and confirmed as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs. The Vietnam veteran, who was awarded the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts for his military service, resigned to write another book in 1987, but almost immediately then-Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger asked him to become Secretary of the Navy.

Webb was confirmed to that post, but it was a short stay. He had conflicts with Weinberger's successor, Frank Carlucci, and didn't agree with the way Carlucci wanted to implement cuts in the Pentagon's budget that had been mandated by Congressional and White House agreement. Specifically, Webb publicly objected to cutting the Navy fleet as Carlucci proposed. Webb's leavetaking was indeed turbulent.
http://www.factcheck.org/article441.html

From wikipedia - Carlucci:

During the early 1970s he became a protégé and was a former roommate at Princeton with Donald Rumsfeld. He was undersecretary of Health, Education and Welfare when Caspar Weinberger was secretary during the Nixon administration. Carlucci became Ambassador to Portugal, and served in this position from 1974 until 1977. Carlucci was deputy defense secretary from 1981 until 1986, national security advisor from 1986 until 1987, and defense secretary in 1987, following the resignation of Weinberger, his nomination by President Ronald Reagan and his confirmation in the Senate by a vote of 91 to 1. He was reportedly less hard-line in policies toward the Soviet Union than Weinberger.

Can either of you fine gentlemen shed some light on this?

> What I want to know is:

Was this a rural Vietnamese custom that was actually witnessed by Webb or other American soldiers in Vietnam or not?

Yes or no.

If it was, then this intervew is a perfect time for Webb to say so and, IMHO, that should be the end of that. It would then be a legitimate recounting of actual local behavior witnessed by American troops in Vietnam.

If it was not, then I am at a loss at how to defend including such an episode in a war novel.<

Webb SAYS he saw it happen.

Such a claim can never be disproven. It sounds more like a "clever" excuse than the truth to me.

And it still does not excuse what he has done. The man is perverted.

Kerry was a highly decorated vet, too.

What Kerry actually did in Vietnam did not merit the medals he recommended himself for.

Webb was the real thing.

**************

The Navy Cross is presented to James H. Webb, Jr., First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company D, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division (Reinforced), Fleet Marine Force, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 10 July 1969, while participating in a company-sized search and destroy operation deep in hostile territory, First Lieutenant Webb's platoon discovered a well-camouflaged bunker complex which appeared to be unoccupied. Deploying his men into defensive positions, First Lieutenant Webb was advancing to the first bunker when three enemy soldiers armed with hand grenades jumped out. Reacting instantly, he grabbed the closest man and, brandishing his .45 caliber pistol at the others, apprehended all three of the soldiers. Accompanied by one of his men, he then approached the second bunker and called for the enemy to surrender. When the hostile soldiers failed to answer him and threw a grenade which detonated dangerously close to him, First Lieutenant Webb detonated a claymore mine in the bunker aperture, accounting for two enemy casualties and disclosing the entrance to a tunnel. Despite the smoke and debris from the explosion and the possibility of enemy soldiers hiding in the tunnel, he then conducted a thorough search which yielded several items of equipment and numerous documents containing valuable intelligence data. Continuing the assault, he approached a third bunker and was preparing to fire into it when the enemy threw another grenade. Observing the grenade land dangerously close to his companion, First Lieutenant Webb simultaneously fired his weapon at the enemy, pushed the Marine away from the grenade, and shielded him from the explosion with his own body. Although sustaining painful fragmentation wounds from the explosion, he managed to throw a grenade into the aperture and completely destroy the remaining bunker. By his courage, aggressive leadership, and selfless devotion to duty, First Lieutenant Webb upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service."

Webb the Pervert is a democrat trying to unseat a republican.

I judge a man by his character and not by what political party he claims.

My impression of James Webb was formed in the mid 1980's while I was an active duty naval officer and he was SECNAV speaking about honor and duty instead of careerism.

>I judge a man by his character and not by what political party he claims.<

The man carried himself well in the Armed Forces, as have countless others. That said, there are other parts of his character that Virginians will not tolerate in one of their Senators, especially when they have a popular, conservative incumbant with a proven record.

Maybe you ought to read his novels. They are chocked full of filth.

Disgusting scenes that have nothing to do with normal relationships or love or anything other than the lowest of the low depictions. A woman sits on a toilet seat in a fully exposed manner while she eats chocolates and reads the Rosary. A man watches her. A man observes his own mother absolutely fully exposed. She is totally denegrated in the specific way it happens. A fifteen year old girl entices a thirteen year old boy to have sex with her. There is lead-in talk about whether he is "big" enough or not and she assures him he is.

I could go on but will not. There is scene after scene after scene which are dirty and lurid in every conceivable way.

Character? What character?

(I have never read the novels as such but have seen excerpts posted on FR and am working from memory of a small portion of what I saw.)

I take the one scene you excused in the context of the rest of his inexcusable filth. This man wants to be VA Senator, defeating its current Senator and former Governor.

I don't think so.

Duke Cunningham was an almost superhuman combat pilot and hero. He was also a crook of the lowest order.

James Webb was a combat hero. He is also a deranged sexual pervert.

Benedict Arnold was the real thing, too. FACT: one can be inhumanly brave and unimaginably courageous in combat and still be a POS. How many SS Nazis were inhumanly brave in combat? FACT: he might have been the greatest thing since bullets at one time, but FACT: he is now in the party of Alger Hiss, Fidel Castro, the Viet Cong, Soviet Russia, North Korea, Michael Moore, the Muslim Jihadists, Roe v. Wade, Gun Control, etc. Therefore, I hope and pray that the sickening pervert freak POS suffers great agony.

Agreed.

James Webb was a combat hero.

Agreed.

He is also a deranged sexual pervert.

If that is based solely on the passage quoted in Post 118, I do not see how that follows.

I have one James Webb novel that I found in paperback at a garage sale which I have not read yet. If it contains passages about what servicemembers see in Third World countries, I am sure that they can be quite shocking at times.
