Governor (Schwarzenegger) bucks trend against GOP

Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appears headed for re-election by a landslide -- even though California voters strongly believe Democrats are better suited to handle key issues like the economy, the Iraq war, immigration and the environment, a new poll shows.

The poll by the Public Policy Institute of California shows that Schwarzenegger has an 18-point lead over Democrat state Treasurer Phil Angelides, and has gained so much momentum that even in the Bay Area -- the state's Democratic bastion -- he holds a 6-point lead.

Bill Carrick, strategist for the Angelides campaign, said of the PPIC poll that the "presumption is a very low turnout election that will be dominated by older, white Republicans."

But he insists that "turnout could be higher, and it could be that Democrats will be more energized, and Republicans will be more depressed" thanks to their disenchantment with the national scene.

As they said before and I have pointed out many times, the Dems are counting on the Republicans/conservatives staying home.

Don't implement the Dem strategy!

Get out and Vote Republican from top to the bottom of the ticket!

I guess if more Republicans ran as dems by taking all their issues away, they'd win too if they lived in a state like California. It's the demographics, yaknow. :-)

ok..I don't live in California..but didn't the la slime in 2003 say that Arnie was going to lose the recall vote by ten points..then ended up by winning like almost 20???..and if I am not mistaken..if Arnie is headed towards a big win next month..won't that involve GOP voters who will hopefully vote for GOP candidates????..just curious..again..don't live there..

if more Republicans ran as dems

I think it's a brilliant move. Register as a Republican and govern as a liberal.

All but die hard partisans on the left are potential supporters and their clones on the right will support you regardless of what you do. That solid base, from mid left to partisan right, will pay dividends in the center.

The partisan right is a sucker for rhetoric and the mid left will settle for tepid results. Talk right, govern left. Perfect.

It's simply brilliant.

"He's done the job of bringing together the Democrats in the Legislature and with his own views on policy, he has made progress in areas Californians feel are important," Baldassare said. "He's delivered for them in a way they can't ignore."

What's missing in this picture?

Bill Carrick, strategist for the Angelides campaign, said of the PPIC poll that the "presumption is a very low turnout election that will be dominated by older, white Republicans."

And all because of Arnold, when every other state is "expected" to see big liberal turnouts.

And this is a bad thing somehow, that Arnold is bringing out our voters?
