This really bothers me. It's one thing to be tolerant, but this IS A CHURCH! Are we supposed to deny that? I wish I could hear what Rush would say. Talk about liberal academia versus traditional mainstream values!

I suspect in the near future they'll be wanting ALL to worship someone else.

People had better WAKE UP!

Why did you excerpt? The Flat Hat isn't on the list of websites requiring excerpts.

What is a chapel without a cross?

If the supreme sacrifice isn't worth commemorating, just how sanctified is the chapel? Might just as well take the whole thing out and raise the flag of agnostics or athiests.

"College removes cross from CHAPEL (War on religion!)"

It should read, "College removes cross from CHAPEL (War on Christianity)"

The Christian religion, which has standards of behavior and a bunch of "thou shalt nots" is and has been under attack by the pin-headed elite for some time. The elite want to do whatever they want to do to whomever they want to do it to. But Christianity says "No." Hence their not so subtle daily attacks. Just watch (if you must) South Park to see the barrage of filth thrown at the Christian Church in every episode.

Just amazing! But I'm not surprised.

Why not leave the cross in there as being representative of the religion that allows all people not of the religion to worship as they choose, IIRC.

Here's the text of the whole article. It wasn't necessary to excerpt it. According to the article, the College of William and Mary is no longer private church affiliated school but is now public .

Cross removed to make Wren Chapel less 'faith-specific'

By Angela Cota
Flat Hat Staff Writer

The cross from the altar area of the Wren Chapel has been removed to ensure that the space is seen as a nondenominational area, Melissa Engimann, assistant director for Historic Campus, said in an e-mail to Wren building employees.

“In order to make the Wren Chapel less of a faith-specific space, and to make it more welcoming to students, faculty, staff and visitors of all faiths, the cross has been removed from the altar area,” Engimann said.

The cross will be returned to the altar for those who wish to use it for events, services or private prayer. Student tour guides have been directed to pass any questions or complaints about the change on to administrators.

The cross was in place because of the College’s former association with the Anglican Church. Though the College is now public and nondenominational, the room will still be considered a chapel.

It's NOT A CHURCH!

Read the article.
It's a "non-denominational worship" area.

Who cares what they do with it?

Guess it's time to write off William & Mary.

W&M has apparently decided to take the PC off-ramp...

This gal does not mean non-denominatiional. She means non-Christian. Any Christian religion would accept/expect a cross because it symbolizes Christ's sacrifice and is an accepted Christian symbol worldwide. Chapel=church..

She is one of the new PC academics and is just carried away with her progressiveness. She should just be carried away, period.

The Wren Chapel isn't quite as historic as it used to be, is it? Are they embarrassed by the school's association with Christianity?

>“In order to make the Wren Chapel less of a faith-specific space,"

I'd say that's a good step to making it a faithless waste of space.

Cerially, what do they believe in? Nothing? Then they're Buddhists

As an alumnus, I just sent this letter ...

To Whom It May Concern:

For years I was dismayed by the policies and actions of the prior administration led by Dr. Sullivan, so much so that I stopped giving to the College. I had hoped that when Dr. Sullivan departed, The College might regain its bearings and better reflect its historical values and cease its serial “PC” actions, particularly those seemingly intended to overtly offend people of Christian faith. Shame on me for bearing false hope.

I read the following with dismay.

http://flathat.wm.edu/story.php?issue=2006-10-06&type=1&aid=1

No person of genuine faith is ever ‘offended’ by the presence of another faith’s icons – they simply choose to take offense. This is particularly true when entering a site of historical significance. I perceive the actions and principles of the College as gutless and soul-less.

I’ve had enough. It’s not just this action; it’s the sum total of over a decade of administrative nonsense. Please take me off every and all mailing lists, place me on do not call lists, and never solicit me for funds, support or participation again unless and until I contact the College.

Regretfully,
