Writers have leeway to write about human character.

Sure they do. Until they voluntarily inject themselves into the public eye and voluntarily agree to hold themselves to a higher standard by wishing to hold elective office. Then they have to be aware that every word spoken in the past (to anyone) and every writen word (in any forum, even a personal diary) is open to full examination. How better to cut to the heart of a person's inner philosophy?

Well said. Like I wrote earlier, we don't want to ban Steven King's books but we don't want Steven King in the US Senate either.
