To hear Jerry Brown as he stumps for attorney general, a voter might think he is running on the Republican ticket with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
During a recent debate with his GOP opponent Chuck Poochigian, Brown, a Democrat, mentioned Schwarzenegger several times, insisting his positions on the environment, gun control and the minimum wage were more in line with the Republican governor.
Then, on a campaign stop in Alameda, he painted Poochigian's views on stem cell research and other issues as far to the right of Schwarzenegger.
Brown mentioned Phil Angelides, the Democratic nominee for governor, once during the events.
"You're going to have an attorney general who's ... going to protect our environment, work with Arnold Schwarzenegger or, uh, Phil Angelides, whoever it is, and take these very difficult laws that have some gray areas in them and are going to be fought by industry," Brown said during a recent debate sponsored by the San Francisco Chronicle.
Brown's campaign consultant said the tactic is not a slap at Angelides; it simply demonstrates how far to the right Brown believes Poochigian's views are.
But political analysts said Brown's penchant for citing Schwarzenegger is indicative of how political boundaries get fuzzy when a Republican gubernatorial candidate is performing strongly -- recent polls show Schwarzenegger leading by as much as 10 points -- in an otherwise Democratic state.
Brown may be trying to make himself acceptable to independent and moderate voters by positioning himself as a centrist, in the mold of Schwarzenegger, said Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, a senior scholar at the University of Southern California.
"Poochigian has been attacking him as liberal," she said.
"The perception of Angelides is that he is a liberal, and Brown doesn't need to have himself connected to Angelides."

He's getting "conservative" in his old age...........relatively speaking........
Geez first Savage supports Brown. Now Brown is supporting The Terminator politics is a strange business.
or longer!
The returen of MOONBEAN...and looking for the GOP? - LOL
Sorry, "no habla ingles!"... wrond address! just keep walking down the street... look for "partido democratico." - ROFL :))
Brown will win by 20 points, and Savage may have a tax issue he wants special treatment for. All politics is truly local.
Only because the Republican governor's postions on those issues are more in line with the Democrat party than that of Republicans. Garamendi said much the same thing to McClintock during the debates--Global Warming, Minimum Wage, Prescription Drugs, etc. Several of these bills passed without a single Republican signature yet the MSM tries to call them "bipartisan". The Dems are trying to paint anyone to the right of Schwarzenegger as an extremist to make the Browns and Pelosis of the world look "moderate". Sorry Charlie--not gonna happen!
