Gays already have the same rights as me. They cannot marry someone of the same sex and neither can I.

Don't all unmarried couples have the same rights. If gays get the same rights as married couples does that mean hetrosexual but unmarried couples will get the same rights as married couples. I think gay marriage is a really bad idea, and I have heard that a group is out there that wants a group marriage.

This is a poorly worded (maybe intentionally) poll question. It asks, "Should gay couples have the same rights to benefits as heterosexual couples?" Notice it does not say anything about "marriage." "Benefits" could be interpreted as healthcare, social security, inheritance, etc. While most Americans are against gay marriage, I think most would say gays should receive the same benefits. I think the question was designed to evoke a positive "yes" response.
I often go to debates in a high school outreach program where the parties respond to questions in front of the kids.
On the subject of gay marriage, I stated that it is the right of the people to define marriage how we see it and that the courts should not impose their perspective upon us.
The Dems, libertarians and Greens all attack the Republican party on gay marriage saying we are imposing our religious beliefs upon everyone else.
I clarify that this is not a *religious* issue, but a *moral* one, much like laws that prevent theft, murder, etc which are also in the bible, but accepted broadly because morality extends beyond any particular religion.
Then I ask the kids this question..."If we are not to impose our own version of morality on others... suppose two guys walk up to the county clerk and request a marriage license, should he give them one?"
You will get a kid to nod their head approvingly.
Then you ask "Now, does it matter if these two guys are BROTHERS?"
The class will vocally express disgust at the thought.
Then I ask "Well, who are WE to impose our version of morality upon those two brothers?!?"
I actually had the Dem insert loudly "Incest is different because it can propagate genetic defects!!" at which point I responded "Its two GUYS dude... do I need to explain why they can't propagate genetic defects?!?"
Then I repeated the question..."Why should we be able to impose our morality upon these two guys?"...and I answer it... because WE as a society have a responsibility to establish moral clarity and define what is best for society as a whole. If we cannot hold marriage between a man and a woman as the epitome of a social structure, then ANY social structure will be held equivalent. Whether it is two guys, two gals, two brothers, two sisters, three people, four, or any other combination..we would have to draw a line. If we have to draw a line, lets leave it where it has been for thousands of years.
It is interesting to see how these kids, who have been brainwashed for years now, see the logic here.
After the class, the girl who asked about gay marriage came up to talk to me. It turns out she was opposed to it, but was instructed by her teacher to ask the question.
These kids are being pummelled every day with gay rights and the equivalency is drawn to race. They are being told that if you oppose homosexuality, and homosexual marriage, you are the equivalent of a racist.
