GUN OWNERS TAKE AIM AT BALLOT BOX

DURING the past decade, hunters have learned to gather their forces in order fight the daily attacks by anti-gun and animal-rights groups.

The more radical the assault on hunters and shooters, the closer sportsmen stick together.

Never is this instinct more visible than on Election Day. Gun owners are quick to spot anti, predatory candidates charging from the long grass. Reacting by forming themselves into a tight group, sportsmen run to the ballot box and vote with an enthusiasm matched by few other blocs.

Their unified voice has made America's 40 million hunters and shooters into a trophy of modern politics.

"From local school boards to the presidency, candidates have come to understand the importance of the sportsmen's vote. Those who share our concerns gain our support. Those who don't face a sizeable obstacle to getting elected," said Doug Painter, president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the 45 year-old trade association for the firearm industry.

NSSF, through its Hunting and Shooting Sports Heritage Fund, administers a program called Vote Your Sport, which reminds hunters and shooters of the diligence required as elections approach. Painter says the Vote Your Sport campaign is needed in 2006 more than ever, because opposing campaigns have become more covert, utilizing deception and stealth tactics in an attempt to split sportsmen and advance the anti agenda.

"The rhetoric can be moderate and appealing, but it pays to look beyond the words," said Painter.

He explained, "For example, judged by name alone, there would seem to be little to fear from groups like the Humane Society of the United States, Americans for Gun Safety, even the American Hunters and Shooters Association (AHSA). But the deeper...

Which is why the Dems now run from the anti-second-amendment crowd like scalded dogs. Gun control has moved to the smokey back rooms of the Democrat Party.

The gun issue died nationally years ago. The fight has been taken locally by the gun-grabbers. There are more sympathetic ears in the local state houses. In 2008 you will not hear 1 candidate talk about new gun control laws. The Dems have removed it from their platform.

As the rats began to view their prospects of winning control of congress as high, their natural gun-grabbing urges began coming out in the open more and more.

There are numerous articles published every day, across the country, written by gun-grabbing rats. If they do win control of congress (which they won't), you can expect the anti's to come crawling out of the woodwork with a vengence. Legislation is already written and ready to be acted on.

The NRA is doing serious damage with its perpetual harping about how guns are all about "sports". The RKBA vote is now being called the "sportsmen's vote", further convincing people who don't grasp the importance of RKBA that the "gun nuts" are unreasonable for objecting to having their toys registered.

Demorats will Impeach Bush

Excuse me, but exactly when and where has the NRA "harped about how guns are all about sport"?? As an NRA member, I get the NRA mag, and self-defense is a MAJOR topic--about equal billing with hunting and target shooting. In fact, in the latest mag, the NRA was cautioning hunters not to buy the "sporting" argument.

And you can bet your bottom dollar that even those felons convicted of violent gun crimes will be included in the re-enfranchisement push.

I think they have just quieted down for the time being. Let the Dems win a couple of seats in each house and you will see new gun control spewing out of Washington in weeks.

Actually, my information does come directly from the NRA website, complete with the huge percentage of articles from their magazines that are "sport" focused. In addition, though I am not and never have been a member of the NRA, they apparently get my name and address from other organizations, and shower me with expensive glossy literature touting how much fun I'd have if I'd sign up for this or that "sport" program.

Particularly alarming is that a lot of stuff I've gotten from them is specifically aimed at women (I'm not a "sir", and Second Amendment Sisters is presumably one of the organizations from which they've gotten my name). Women in this country disproportionately don't grasp the real significance of RKBA, and it doesn't help when the NRA is spendign money to reinforce the idea among women that the main reason for non-criminals to own guns and shoot is for "sport".

If the NRA is starting to shift its focus, that's great, but it must be pretty recent (it was only a few months ago that I took a long hard look at the stuff on their website, when another FR poster tried to tell me they weren't focused on "sport"), and in response to a lot of public harping from people like me about their misguided "sport" focus.

Sorry, Shrinkie, but I think you suffer from either selective vision or selective memory. As I said, I've been an NRA member for a LONG time, and the "sports emphasis" comprises about a third of what I see from them on a regular basis.

A quick glance at the current lead-in page of the NRA website shows just about the same ratio of subjects.

And why is it "bad" that the NRA is sending out stuff "specifically aimed at women"?? I've seen some of it, and self-defense is a BIG part of same. Yes, some of it is aimed at getting women into the "shooting sports", but, if they succeed, the RKBA attitude will follow along behind as a result.
