Duke was fast to put the players up for sacrafice. But now it looks as the case is a total farce, Duke still won't do anything for the players. What a disgrace. Who would want to send their children to a university that treats its students like this?
"but why should the president of a university meet with a student or his family members about whether credits from another university will be accepted at Duke?"
"Both Colin and Reade Seligmann are taking classes this semester at colleges near their homes. However, Duke will not let them transfer more than two courses so they are unable to keep up with their studies while suspended unless they get permission to transfer more. "
Duke would not allow the transfer, and so they had to ask for that permission.
High-ranking academic dorks routinely insult students and their families all the time.
This is from a third rate democrat party blog whose despicable, evil readership is irate that the blatantly framed Duke lacrosse players are getting even a hint of justice.
IMHO, Duke sacrificed these kids to try to protect its own imagine. Duke should have put some political pressure on the DA office once it became apparent that the case had no merits, which was actually pretty early on. These kids lives have been torn apart, and Duke should do whatever they can to accommodate them.
The statement also makes note :
"There has not been a single note, card or other expression of kindness from anyone in the Duke administration to any of the three accused students."
Only thing they're guilty of is being white.
Hey - Duke had every right to expel those students! And they only suspended them which is not inappropriate simply for the illegal drinking party they held! Personally I'd be less inclined to send my kids there if they hadn't suspended the players simply for the boozing! quit your hand-wringing!
Not without some form of due process (at least an administrative hearing). Under which, the university would need to discuss the totality of the evidence - unless they want to be subject to a HUGE lawsuit later on.
On what basis could they be expelled? Being accused?
Now THAT's justice! /sarcasm
If this situation is not resolved to the students' satisfaction, I would recommend taking it up with the school's alumni association. Nothing will do more to light a fire under the @ss of a school president than a fear that wealthy alumni might put away their checkbooks during the school's next annual fund-raising effort.
As someone who has a relative on the Duke team, I can personally attest to the disgraceful and shabby treatment giving to the players by the feckless administratio. "Duke Lax Guts"..says it all..
If every university expelled every student who went to a drinking party, there would not be many students left in college. For good or ill (ill, IMHO), drinking is ubiquitous on US university campuses.
As to why the parents were meeting with the University President, I would imagine these students petitioned to have excess units transferred, and their case got kicked up the ladder, for obvious reasons. No low-level flunky is going to intervene in this dog's breakfast of a case if they can get the boss to make the call. And up the ladder it goes.
Good point
illegal drinking party they held!.
Have they been accused of this? Thats news to me. BTW the party was at an off campus apartment. Duke U. has no jurisdiction there.
I dont know about you but a lot of people in college go to frat parties and they aren't sipping Kool Aid.
Hey, he doesn't have to meet with them, it's not like they're basketball players or someone important!!! (sarcasm off).
If past history is of any significance heaven help them if they are Jewish. Duke was famous at one time for it's Jewish quota.
