Hippopotamuses are being butchered by the hundreds inside a Central African wildlife reserve, conservation groups report.
An aerial census conducted yesterday put the hippo population in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) at 629.

I didn't see this anywhere after doing a search but if its already been posted the Mods can remove it.
Was it the Rove De-hippofier 4300? It was untested to date.
Do they eat hippo? Does it taste like chicken?
It is a shame about all the hippos. Hoe none were from Hutto, TX.
Very un-hip.
With lttle or no refrigeration most of the meat rots. They mostly want the teeth for the ivory trade. Rotten bast**ds.

Yeah, I read about it another place. The poachers and ruthless animal killers like that for the ivory are bad. Aren't they pretty much subject to summary execution if caught? I know that was true with elephant ivory poachers.
Tragedy of the commons.
Sorry, my bad...I won't do that again.
Well, with fewer hippos around, the number of small white marbles will increase.
Has Rosie O'Donnell been injured?
I need to get my eyes checked. At first, I thought it said 'Hippies Butchered by the Hundreds...'
The article says that its being done by armed militia rebels operating inside the park. I doubt that the Congo government has the resources to deal with them let alone the resolve. These arn't your average poachers who are executed when caught.
Well, here's hoping the hippos strike back once in a while. Those are some of the most dangerous animals on the planet, despite their appearance. Surely the poachers deserve such an unpleasant fate.
I doubt that they get close enough to be in danger. Why take them out one at a time with bullets? They probably just lob a couple of grenades into the herd and go in later to do their business.
Maybe PETA can send a contingent of half naked, half brained, beautiful people to show the Congolese rebels the error of their ways.
Anyone in the Congo is subject to summary execution for just being there. It's always been that way.
