Doomsday Scenario: 'America Alone'
Monday , October 23, 2006
This is a partial transcript from "The Journal Editorial Report," October 21, 2006, that has been edited for clarity.
PAUL GIGOT, FOX HOST: "America Alone: The End of the World as We Know It" forecasts a dark future in which the nations of Old Europe fall to Islam fundamentalism. And the United States remains the last Western democracy.
Earlier, I spoke to the author, columnist Mark Steyn.

GIGOT: In your book, you write that much of what we loosely call the "Western World will not survive the 21st Century. And much of it will effectively disappear within our lifetimes, including many, if not most, European countries", end quote. That sounds like a doomsday scenario.
MARK STEYN, COLUMNIST AND AUTHOR OF "AMERICA ALONE": It is. I tried to be cheerful. But it is hard to be cheerful about apocalyptic-type stuff. And this is what it is.
Basically, 17 European countries have what demographers call lowest-load fertility, from which no society ever recovered. That means they are basically not having enough babies.
And the way Europe is set up, they have these unsustainable social programs and welfare. And they imported the babies that they didn't have. They imported them essentially from the North Africa and the Middle East.
So we're seeing one of the fastest population transformations in history, whereby an aging ethnic European population is being replaced by a Muslim population. And the Muslims understand that, in fact, Europe, as they see it, is the colony now.
GIGOT: Is there any way that Europe can avoid being Islamacized in this way?

I think his pessimism for Europe is well founded, but I think Steyn overlooks America's own immigration problems mostly because the majority of the influx is not Muslim.

Yes, Muslims are a diffrrent breed of cat altogether. A whole different animal. The seem to love to kill each other. That's fine as long as we don't get involved.
Thank goodness George W. has dropped all that "stay the course" stuff.
The difference is that Europe's immigrant problem is to the point that it is growing from within Europe. The millions in the USA are hardly a blip on the societal radar. In the USA it is not a multi-generational problem as of yet. The children of immigrants in the USA aspire to be asimilated to a larger degree than in Europe.
Nominally Roman Catholic 89%, Protestant 6%, other 5%.

You should worry about the creation of a permanent underclass hailing from Mexico. Without assimilation - including renunciation of irridentist claims to the southwestern US, Mexican immigration is a disaster for us and for Mexico.
I must agree with you.
He was on the Bill Bennett show this morning. Sounds likes a good book.
You have a point of course, when the slavs were cut loose after the Civil War they were never assimilated, and now 200 years later many of them still arent.
140 Proof STEYNAHOL!!!
"You have a point of course, when the slavs were cut loose after the Civil War they were never assimilated, and now 200 years later many of them still arent.
That is probably because they are easily recognizable. If they looked the same or similar to everyone else, they would be long since assimilated.
I just do not think that Europe will go muslim. As to why it stops and reverses, I think the EU is due for a Great Awakening of their own, which might have a big effect on the pregnancy rate.
They may also begin a progrom of muslims. It is not as if they haven't done it before and it is a political play that seems to come easy to them.
The world had their Butts kicked by 1941.Germany and Japan
Owned it.Sounds like the same thing to me.We Will Get By .
Make Do With What We Have.I don't see a problem.
