Stars keep lining up for Proposition 87, a ballot measure that seeks to tax California's oil production to help finance alternative fuel development.
The Yes on Prop. 87 campaign started airing a television commercial Monday featuring Bill Clinton that's cobbled together from a speech he gave at a rally in support of the initiative last week at UCLA.
Clinton, a popular figure in heavily Democratic California, now joins a list of other big names who have come out in support of the measure. Actress Geena Davis appeared with Clinton at Friday's rally, and Julia Roberts stumped for the initiative at the Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA on Monday.
A television ad featuring the former president's running mate, Al Gore, also has been on the air for a week, rounding out an impressive list of big-name supporters to fend off the opposing campaign backed by Big Oil, which has poured in more than $68 million to defeat the measure.

I wonder how long it took Bill to get Geena Davis back to his hotelroom to show her his global initiative.
Just goes to show that a liberal never sees a tax he doesn't like.

Clinton Says Raise Taxes on Oil
Former President Bill Clinton says that taxes hikes on oil will reduce dependence on energy. Clinton threw his support behind Proposition 87, which calls for raising taxes on oil to encourage conservation and fund government research on alternate fuels.
"High oil prices are the key to saving the planet, Clinton told a cheering crowd at the campus. It will encourage people to forego foolish travel. There is no need for the average person to be driving wherever and whenever he pleases. There is no need for these people to be jetting around the country for frivolous reasons. Oil needs to be conserved for important purposeslike my trip to join you here tonight for this rally.
Proposition 87 has drawn criticism from opponents who claim that raising taxes on oil produced in California would discourage production and make the state more dependent on foreign oil. The California Taxpayers Association (CTA) and several public safety groups are opposing the proposition.
A couple of months ago these Democrats were saying high prices were wrecking the economy and that it was Bushs fault, said Tom Swift, spokesman for the CTA. Now theyre saying high prices are a good thing? It makes no sense.
Clinton explained the apparent inconsistency. Bushs high prices werent the result of higher taxes, Clinton pointed out. The money was all flowing to the private sector where all it would do is encourage companies to supply more fuel. This would just perpetuate wasteful travel. Prop 87 extracts the money from consumers and funnels it into projects selected by the government. There would be no risk of

F@ckin limousine liberals.
Seems like it used to be that we let the people decide and not who has the biggest ad campaign.
Well I was never voting for it anyway but the more rich liberals who don't live in California telling me I have to foot the bill for alternative energy while they fly their private jets home after election day the more people I'm convincing to vote against it.
With all due respect I think a sarcasm tag would be appropriate.
It's telling that this article never mentions the pros and cons of Prop 87 -- only the celebrities involved.
Isnt there some intern he should be getting a blowjob from someplace ????????
All those vacation destinations that the goverment touts as "Historical" pay a price also.
Please remember that Bubba raised the tax on fuel...by I think, 8 cents a gallon. Who did it hurt most?? The poor and the elderly. So much for the "good" in higher gas prices.
Well known mechanism in Economics: Increase in cost of travel generates a proprotionate decline in consumer spending. It does NOT generate a proportionate decline in travel.
These tree-huggers alsways seem to think that there exists some HUGE portion of people who use their cars to drive around just for the sake of driving around. People use their cars, fly airplanes and ride busses for the vast majority part to get to work or go grocery-shopping. Making it more expensive to travel will only mean that people have to cut down on something else. Travel is not a 'luxury' product, it's a necessity.
And when are people gonna stop letting Hollywood dilletants decide what they should think. Like Julia Roberts knows squat about anything besides smiling for the camera.
Would it be too much of conspiracy to think that Clinton knows it will tank the economy in order to help Democrats (including his spouse) get elected in 2008? They don't have to say "I want the economy to tank." They only have to say "raise tax on gas."

Big Oil will not be the one paying this tax. Sadly, the people of CA will probably pass this proposition. When will some sanity return to the Golden State?
