Mike McGavick for US Senate [Seattle Times endorses]
Seattle Times ^ | 22 October 2006

Posted on 10/22/2006 3:20:18 PM PDT by Publius

In Sen. Maria Cantwell and challenger Mike McGavick, Washington has two fully qualified choices for the Senate. The better choice is the Republican, McGavick.

Some see this election as a referendum on George W. Bush. If we did, we would be for a solid Democratic ticket. But like most Washington voters, we take our candidates one at a time. Mike McGavick is an unusual businessman-politician. He managed the multibillion-dollar turnaround of Safeco Corporation, sacrificing some jobs but saving many others. He showed a sense of social purpose in his stress on racial inclusion at Safeco. He knows politics, having worked for Sen. Slade Gorton. He has run a clean campaign.

Critics will note that McGavick supports the elimination of the federal estate tax, a cause for which The Seattle Times has campaigned many years. That is part of why we endorse him, but not most of it. We endorsed Cantwell six years ago, knowing her position on the estate tax, and could endorse her again.

Notice the wink and nod right there in the first line?

And the Cleveland New Dealer endorsed Mike DeWine. There is something afoot here.

Unfortunately, I think Can't-Vote-Well will win, but, I'm trying to be positive, especially after the debate. FWIW here are the latest polls (some have said you can add 5-10% to the Pubbies due to the way they're polling) (sorry, I don't know how to format these)

Here's electoralvote.com:

And here is rcp:

Maybe they're just waking up to the fact that our candidates are better than their candidates.

Howdy, Pub'! The Times endorsed Bush in 2000 as well IIRC. Didn't set too well with the local chardonnay libs.

Word is Cantwell's got it under control if she can stay out of jail with respect to the stock deal she used to get elected last time. Time will tell...

The Times endorsed Bush in 2000.

The Times BIG issue is the estate tax. Anyone who's fer it is the Blythen family enemy. McGavick has campaigned agin' it as did GWB.

The Minneapolis StarTribune (aka The Red Star)is the same way.

Their editorial pages are as reliable far-Left as any paper in the US.

But they occasionally endorse Republicans in an effort to make it appear as though they are capable of thinking bi-partisan.

Maybe they are getting the idea that most people are not left-wingers. And that as they continue to endorse left-wing loonies that we will cancel our subscriptions to their liberal rags. Just a thought for the MSM Dinosaur Watch.

I can't believe this is the Seattle Times. This is one of the most liberal papers out there. It is my local paper, and I never buy it because it almost unreadable due to leftist bias.

Is this guy conservative? The article makes him sound like a bigger lib than the Dem.

Quick, put up your safety umbrellas. Those liberal pigs could be leaking venom ;)

BTW Just got home from Teatro Zinzanni, celebrating my parent's birthdays. Another really great show is running. Voronin "The Maestro"... He was wonderful - actually the entire cast was fabulous!

As a general rule, when the Seattle Times endorses a Republican for statewide office, they win.

In 2004, for the open AG and Governor seats, they endorsed McKenna and Rossi. Both won. Yes, I know, technically, Rossi isn't Governor, but he won and most Washingtonians know it.

It was the first time they endorsed a Republican for Governor in 20 years.

As the article said, Slade lost their endorsement in 2000 and lost. He had it in 1994 and won.

See, for the Seattle and suburban moderates, a Times endorsement is a green light that 'This guy isn't a right-wing nut, so it's OK to vote for him' and a lot of them do as a result.

Do I now think he will win? No, but I'm a lot more hopeful.

Based on what?

He's pro-tax cut, pro business, conservative on the WOT, moderate on social issues.

You aren't going to get Tom Coburn, or even John Ensign from Washington. R's have won 5 Senate races in the history of the state, and one of those was a fluke in an off year special election, and 3 of the others were all won by the same guy, Slade Gorton. McGavick's old boss.

It's either McConnell or Lott.

Coburn isn't suited for the job. Even he'd say that. The job of the majority leader is to get a group of diverse folks together on one page as often as possible. Coburn's a lot more valuable without the burden of having to do that.

hmm... I didn't know that. The only reason I was guessing that was I've seen it happen elsewhere, but glad to hear it isn't hte case here.
