A Democratic Sweep -- and then what?
San Diego Union-Tribune ^ | October 22, 2006 | Robert J. Caldwell

Posted on 10/22/2006 8:02:16 AM PDT by kellynla

The conventional wisdom (how often does it prove wrong?) is that the 2006 midterm elections will be 1994 in reverse. The Republican tsunami of that year will be replicated this year by a Democratic wave that will wrest control of the House of Representatives and perhaps the Senate, too, from the GOP.

That may happen. Certainly the polls suggest a dismal night Nov. 7 for the Republicans.

And yet, there is one especially startling difference between the 1994 GOP blowout and the apparently pending Democratic sweep this year.

In 1994, Republicans nationalized the midterm congressional elections by uniting around a national agenda, Newt Gingrich's Contract With America, endorsed by 370 Republican congressional candidates. In stark contrast, the Democrats this year have no agreed-upon national agenda.

The Democrats' strategy, to the extent they have one, is to make the 2006 midterms a referendum on an unpopular president and an unpopular war. That may be enough to get them elected, but then what?

Here is where the 1994 analogy breaks down completely. Gingrich and the new Republican majorities in the House and Senate went on to pull Bill Clinton's erratic presidency back toward the center from its liberal excesses of 1993-94. Welfare reform, spending restraint, and a balanced-budget compact followed by successive years of budget surpluses were all products of the Gingrich revolution in Congress.

The dimbulbcRats are not going to win the house nor the senate. They will remain the minority for years if not generations to come

2. Bush will veto everything and the RATS and the MSM will accuse Bush of obstruction. "

I'd consider that best-case ... worst-case is ...
"2. Democrats will pass liberal bills on immigration, and Bush, eager for an 'accomplishment' will sign it. The RATS and the MSM will accuse Bush of obstruction if it vetoes anything, and push leftist legislation forward that way."

The rest is mostly true. Plus
8. The Dems will use their new majority for a series of witchhunt committee investigations into just about anything they care to consider foddre for their kooky world-view: oil company execs will be keel-hauled; they will go after Cheney; they will even get walmart under investigation; they will have the CIA and army interrogators under a microscope; they will hold hearing after hearing after hearing designed to drag us further into defeatism in Iraq.

A Democrat victory in November will mean a defeat for democracy in Iraq.

Whether it happens or not depends on the actions we take between now and the close of polls on election day.

John Conyers will take over the Judiciary Committee and he has promised to launch impeachment hearings. Two years of impeachment hearings !

Be not afraid of the impeachment hearings. The Democrats are salivating to do it....but those things don't always turn out as planned.

if John Conyers takes over the Judiciary Committee , then there will be a big mess.

Not just two years of political impeachment hearings, but alot more, too.

But there’s the rub.

No impeachment hearings to strengthen their hand for the 2008 elections will affect their radical money base. “No money, no honey, honey” was what the bar girls have said for years. You don’t give me what I want I don’t give you what you want.

Impeachment hearings will probably be a replay of the clinton impeachment. “I tried” will be viewed as “I am very trying” by the moneyed radicals. After all, they paid for the dimocrat victories and the democrats had darn well better deliver or next year; “No money, no honey, hony.”

In short the democrats have placed themselves in a position where the real election (the House, 1/3rd of the Senate and the White House) in 2008 may well beyond any reach because they anger their moneyed base or they anger their moneyed base. There is, IMHO, no third option for them.

Sure.

Islam wants to control the world.

They have made more gains in Europe this one generation than the previous centuries.

I will post a map from the 700's

That may happen. Certainly the polls suggest a dismal night Nov. 7 for the Republicans.

The only scheduled time the media takes a breather from the likes of "global warming" stories is preelection time.

And it's STILL doom and gloom mongering....

"A Democratic Sweep -- and then what?"

1) the one word that will define the democratic house
is Subpoena - the lib/dems will make sure every thing
tied to republicans and Bush will have one
This will tie up most of the agenda in preparation for #2

2) impeachment proceedings -
the "Eminently" qualified john conners (aa) mi - will
head the impeachment committees to bring Bush up on
charges real or contrived

3) taxes - votes for tax cut repeals will be proposed
this action will decrease &/or end business growth
and increase of revenues to the US treasury

4) increase of mininmum wage - how better to to slow down
business growth and the economy than to mandate higher
wages

5) proposed increase to funding for medicare prescription
drugs - the amount now spent by the US taxpayers isn't
sufficient and besides the lib/dems cannot stand that
republicans got this funding passed when in 40 years
they could not!!!!

6) iraq - a time table will be established to cut & run
No... the lib/dems cannot make the decision...that is
still the purview of the President...But...the lib/dems
will vote to cut off funding...because they are against
the war but support the troops!!!

7) military funding - the lib/dems will mirror clinton's
defunding & dismantling of the military

8) illegal aliens - the lib/dems will try to impose the
senate plan....give all illegals amnesty/social security
/tax forgiveness/free medical/free education....and how
will they fund all of this???....see #3 & 7!!!

Yes, most of the plan is about the economy...stupid....but the stupid US Taxpayers will allow their pockets to be picked once again to fund all of this crap!!!!

In the end, the US will be weaker, the economy in decline..the illegals having more rights than citizens....but after all this happens...the lib/dems will still have the golden reason for everything...the mantra they have chnated the past 6 years.....

It is all Bush's fault!!!!!

Iraq?

Small thinking my FRiend. ; )

Replace "in Iraq" with "globally" and you will be so close to the true that you could reach out and touch it.

Oh indeed there will be a big mess. We can only do what we can do to keep that from happening. But if it does occur, then we should not view it as the end of the world because....it will be a big mess.

The Democrats are very good at proving "Democrats Take Power=Big Mess". Thats to be expected. In fact, if they do take power, it should be encouraged. "Do not throw me in that briar patch!".

If the American people choose them...then they should experience their full agenda. Maybe next time the Republicans take power they will actually clean it up.

Republicans are in this shape because they did not do what they said they would do. They just became "Democrat lite". This is a lesson to be learned.

The American people will have to be reminded just what it means to have these crazies in power. And Republican pols need to be reminded that "going along to get along" means these crazies taking their jobs.

Hopefully it won't come to it. But the Democrat leadership will be extremo if it does. They won't be able to restrain themselves. Thats a lot better than these crazies taking power and being able to appear reasonable.

That's a difficult one to answer because the Democrats have no real plan for running America and that makes them scary. The agenda of several of them is to give us a good taste of Socialism, and others are so filled with hate toward President Bush that they can't get beyond that hatred. Who knows what they will do. Whatever it would be, I don't want any part of it.

They just became "Democrat lite". This is a lesson to be learned.

My way of seeing it is they didn't bite off more than they could chew, knew that a slow process is a sure process, and that appeasing the public with quick fixes that don't last would make them connoisseurs of the liberal methodology.
