MOGADISHU, Somalia — An Islamic court banned women from swimming at the main beach in the capital to keep women from mingling with men, an official said Friday.
"We stopped women from swimming because it is against the teaching of Islam for women to mingle with men, especially while they are swimming," said Sheikh Farah Ali Hussein, chair of a northern Mogadishu Islamic court.
Miriam Isse watched others swimming in the Indian Ocean Friday.

"They cannot prevent us from our right to swim in the sea," she said. "What is wrong with us enjoying ourselves like men? That is clear discrimination."
Somali women usually swim fully clothed. Somali men, however, swim in trunks, at times bare-chested or wearing vests.
Hard-line Islamic leaders' militia have swept through most of southern Somalia since taking over Mogadishu in June. Their sometimes strict and often severe interpretation of Islam has raised the specter of Afghanistan's ousted Taliban regime, and contrasts with the moderate Islam that has dominated Somali culture for centuries. They have introduced public executions and floggings of convicts.

I can't believe there's even talk of enjoying one's self in an Islamic nation. It's an oxymoron.
A thought: How can Muslim women nurse their children wearing a burka? Perhaps the goats nurse their "kids?" (After all, the men sleep with their animals--they must have exceptional mammaries.) On the other hand, the goats wouldn't touch a Muskim "kid;" goats are peaceful. Oh well, perhaps the "kids" suffered brain damage from lack of oxygen nursing under the burka?

It is a ray of hope. Remember in the South, it was illegal to teach a slave to read. The slaveowning didn't want slaves to get "ideas." And if they were to learn to read, they'd get ideas, from books. These women talking about rights, and enjoying themselves, it is through them that islam will come into the 21st century.

The wording of what you wrote made it sound funny, but it is so true. I was wondering how these people ever have children if they aren't allowed to even look at women.
Well, that would offer equal opportunity for ugly women. Which, in addition to their secret, latent desire to be enslaved by brutish Third World men, is probably why Western feminists never have anything bad to say about Islam. ;)

Thanks! The glass is half full with these women. If only we could get hollywood to disengage with the pro-gay agenda and use that time and writers' skills to show more muslim women realizing the veil is medeval and backward, going to school, telling their bomb-making husbands that murder in the name of religion is uncivilized (no sex until you stop making bombs!). Just some ideas. Our TV shows are shown over there, I recall hearing they loved Dallas. Let's give them something more positive to aspire to than mindless soaps. It would be a great way to propagandize them in a good way. I'd like them all to become like our conservative women. Do it right and they will. A nighmare scenario would be if they all became feminists which is almost as dangerous as islam.
