I don't think the President minded at all. He seems to have fun when he's with very tall basketball players or even female volleyball players that are taller than he.

He's just comfortable 'in his own skin.' I'm sure it didn't bother him a bit.

At least parts 1 and 2 were seated.

He's just comfortable 'in his own skin.'

No question about that. It is a wonderful trait of his.

As NordP says perception is key with the media. Maybe I am being naive but I do not think the problems with the BOR interview were intentional. It may well have been that the President was trying to create a more relaxed atmosphere walking with Bill.

Unfortunately it did not come off and especially near the end of the interview I found it distracting. The tie thing also seemed strange - lack of planning that points to IMHO.

I agree and as I said above I think that probably because of the content of 3 this is why it was done this way but it did not work out I think how his PR people hoped it would.

I shall remain stubborn. I like the pictures. And one of my great pleasures in life is taking something the MSM does to try to trash the Pres and turn it into something endearing. The look on his face in those pictures is adorable. As far as I'm concerned, any (non-photoshopped) picture of the Pres is a good one.

OK reading the comments re photos in post 9, there seems more vocal opposition to them than seeing them as I and couple of others did as funny and cute.

I think maybe a lot of people are understandably sensitive at present to anything that can be interpreted as anti or poking fun or showing the President and other Republicans in a bad light.

Though I personally do not think that the photos are disrespectful and that they show a semi funny and a very human and normal reaction to dismounting from this type of vehicle I will ask for them to be removed.

We had very similar ones of our Queen in the Daily Newspaper this week and to me I just smiled and thought she handled the situation well.

We all see things differently and as I said I think that maybe at present very polarized again understandably with all the nonsense and nastiness of this current campaign and I apologise if I have upset anyone by posting them in the first place.

I agree Kate but popular concesus seems to be to have them removed so I have asked the mods to do so. I will leave them on Sanity Island server though for anyone who wants them.

Eleanor, another excellent edition! Thank you.

Drawing from 9-11, artist presents portrait to Bush

By Michael Collins
Post Washington Bureau
TERRY DUENNES/The Post

Self-taught artist John Osborne created a drawing of President Bush, which he presented in person Monday in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON - John Osborne had two things in mind when he began sketching a portrait of President Bush after 9-11. He wanted to capture the determination that he saw reflected in the president's face. And he wanted to find someone who could help him get the drawing into the president's hands. People who've seen the finished portrait tell him there's no question that he achieved his first goal.

He accomplished the second on Monday when he hand-delivered the drawing himself to President Bush in the Oval Office.

"It's one of the greatest things that has happened to me," the Williamstown, Ky., artist said afterward. Bush "just seems as ordinary and everyday as anybody," he said.

Osborne, who has been painting battlefield scenes, aircraft and portraits of historical figures for nearly 40 years, began working on the drawing of President Bush shortly after the 9-11 terrorist attacks in Washington and New York.

He had wanted to do something with the president's image for some time, and 9-11 provided the inspiration. "I think everybody was kind of caught up in the moment, and I had this desire to do something that pertained to 9-11," he said. "It seemed like the opportunity and the time were right."

For the president's image, Osborne worked from a magazine photo taken during Bush's visit to Ground Zero in the days after the attacks. Working with graphite and colored pencils, he added an American flag in the background for a patriotic touch.

Osborne estimates that he put 30 to 40 hours into the project before finishing it in February 2002.

He eventually gave a copy of the portrait to Geoff Davis, a Hebron Republican who was running for Congress at the time, and mentioned that he'd like for somebody to give it to the president some day. "He told me if he ever got to be a congressman, he'd do his best to see that I got to do it personally," Osborne said. Davis, who was elected two years ago, said he broached the subject with the president while traveling with him on Air Force One to Northern Kentucky in May. Bush turned to an aide who was traveling with him and said, "Make it happen," Davis recalled.

Davis and Osborne's sister, Carolyn Denny of Burlington, accompanied the artist to the White House on Monday for the presentation. On the way into the Oval Office, they also got to meet Vice President Dick Cheney.

During the meeting with Bush, which lasted about 10 or 15 minutes, the president came across as kind of laid back and down to earth, Osborne said.

"I had forgotten to pack a dress shirt, and I explained that to him," Osborne said. "He said, 'You look fine. I wish I could get by without wearing a necktie myself.'"

Osborne said Bush was impressed with the portrait. "He was quite happy with it," he said.

After the presentation, the president showed the group around the Oval Office and pointed out some of the Texas artwork hanging on the walls.

Osborne has no idea what Bush plans to do with the portrait he gave him. "I didn't have the presence of mind to ask him," he said.

Osborne, 63, works for a company in Dry Ridge that builds in-ground swimming pools and sells pool supplies. He has been interested in art since childhood, but has no formal training.

After he returned home from the Vietnam War, he bought some oil paints and took up painting to stay awake at night and keep from having nightmares.

Osborne used to tell people that he was a self-taught artist. But now, he said, he realizes his talent was a gift from a higher power. "If God's hand wasn't in it, I couldn't do it," he said. "It's my belief that God gives you talents and abilities."

Hey, I just got back on the computer. I got a call from one of hubby's good friends and he was crying and that got me to crying. I have been reading. When I am upset, that is one of the things I do. How about the first one with the kids eating ice cream? I did not realize that I had been reading for so long. Time to go to sleep if I can. Thanks.

This man did a portrait of the president and got to deliver it in person to him in the Oval Office.

Inspirational, no?
