ROTHERHAM, England Five months after the celebrity chef Jamie Oliver succeeded in cajoling, threatening and shaming the British government into banning junk food from its school cafeterias, many schools are learning that you can lead a child to a healthy lunch, but you cant make him eat.
The fancy new menu at the Rawmarsh School here?
Its rubbish, said Andreas Petrou, an 11th grader. Instead, en route to school recently, he was enjoying a north of England specialty known as a chip butty: a French-fries-and-butter sandwich doused in vinegar.
We didnt get a choice, he said of the school food. They just told us we were having it.
The governments regulations, which took effect in September, have banished from school cafeterias the cheap, instantly gratifying meals that children love by default: the hamburgers, the French fries, the breaded, deep-fried processed meat, the sugary drinks.

I will eat canned baked beans, creamed corn and use canned beans for various recipes........other than that, I use no canned veggies in my house. I absolutely despise them.
Fresh or frozen is how I prefer my veggies.
Haggis??? Great traditional food???
You can get loose P G Tips and Typhoo at most Cost Plus World Markets. Also Branston Pickle, Salad Cream, Tomato Soup, Baked Beans, and Tim Tams*!
*Yes, I know, Tim Tams are Australian, but no matter how much I love the little wrappers Penguins come in, or the silly joke under the flap, Tim Tams just taste better LOL
My people came England, and they brought their horrible cooking skills with them. I love them, but I'm glad I don't have to eat that poison any more.
Me...."Nice looking steak there Mom, how ya going to cook it?"
Mom...."boil it"
Me...."how long"?
Mom..."A few days"
Me...."A shame, I won't be home on Wednesday, sorry I'll miss it".
LOL!!!! I need to remember to pick up a bottle. I've got apple cider, red wine, white, champagne, but no malt :(
What kind of jellies do you make Gabz?
Hot pepper, wine, and garlic.
OUCH...........
I'm going to hunt for these Tim Tams - just looked them up in my biscuit bible. They look pretty decadent with all the chocolate. I'm still hunting for Jammie Dodgers although it's easy to find Hob Nobs in the A&P.
World Market has Jammie Dodgers, but they were always stale so I stopped buying them :P
I used to tell my mother that when I knew she was making lamb...how on earth can anyone eat that stuff? And mutton is even nastier.
Don't they put suet in wild bird feeders? It's really fat to get birds through the winter.
I used to shove my liver down my knee socks and feed it to the dog. :)
I love vinegar and salt on fries-you could lose the buttered bread. Our relatives from North Carolina dip their fries in Mayo.
Keep it on the subject.

Well, hello, Mr. Hand, how are you doing? Or should I call you HAND some. Do you need a hand or should I just give you one? I've got to hand it to you, that was a good one. Maybe you could use one of those hand trucks though without having to use an arm or a leg. Hope you can get a hand-le on it. Things like that go hand in foot you know, though that's better than foot-in-mouth except when you have your hands up.
Well, it's been a pleasure talking to you Mr. Hand. I sincerely hope we get this opportunity to talk again. :)
If you do, do it somewhere else, like maybe where someone cares.
"If you do, do it somewhere else, like maybe where someone cares."
I must be talking to Mr. Foot-in-Mouth now (though that is often me too). I didn't realize I was addressing you. I guess you did care because you RESPONDED with an equally "brilliant" reply. It is nice to make your acquantance too.
