Why Gas Prices Dropped money.cnn.com ^ | October 16 2006 | Nelson D. Schwartz

Posted on 10/16/2006 10:31:49 AM CDT by kellynla

(Fortune Magazine) -- If the recent plunge in gas prices is the result of a conspiracy by President George W. Bush to help the Republicans retain control of Congress, as 42 percent of Americans believe, according to one Gallup poll, a lot of Wall Streeters wish they'd been in on the plot.

So what really drove prices down - if not an Oliver Stone-worthy scenario involving the Commander-in-Chief, the House of Saud and Secretary of the Treasury Hank Paulson cajoling his cronies at Goldman Sachs to sink the crude market?

By late summer, hedge funds and other investors had poured billions into long positions in oil, gasoline, natural gas and the rest of what traders call the "energy complex," all betting on a replay of the severe 2005 hurricane season that sent prices soaring in the wake of Katrina and Rita. But one day after oil reached a monthly high of $76.98 a barrel on Aug. 7, government meteorologists downgraded their hurricane forecast and cautioned that a repeat of 2005 was "unlikely."

That announcement, combined with the end of the summer driving season and a recalibration of the Goldman Sachs (Charts) commodity index that reduced the weighting of gasoline, prompted speculators to head for the exits even faster than they'd piled in.

The switch in Goldman's basket of commodities had been previously announced by the firm, but that didn't stop the conspiracy theorists.

Exactly right. A Republican Majority can be made stronger conservative every couple years during the primaries, but if there is a Democrat majority, it's all over, and it will be all liberal legislation all the time, all tax cuts reversed, increased spending, we'll retreat from the war, the border will be opened and all attmepts to stop it will be blocked, and it will be liberal or milk toast moderate judges or no judges. IF someone is really conservative, they'll vote Republican even if they don't like some things in the GOP. The primaries are the time to fix those things and push more conservative candidates and replace retiring RINOs when they retire. The election is time to dance with what brung you, not sit it out and help Democrats win and destroy this country.

Pretty obvious when he said he thought Buchanan was the true Conservative leader..

All of these anti-outsourcing fanatics fail to realize that for every one job we outsource, we in-source five.

What they also fail to realize is that all manual labor outsourced jobs requires US management level jobs to oversee outsourcing contracts and production.

They also fail to realize that these are all parts of an unregulated economy- a conservative principle. Regulating companies by telling them how they do business is, in no way, Conservative.

Finally, this caller fails to realize that as technology progresses, a worker in a Goodyear plant making tires doesn't have a $25 an hour skill any longer. That skill in the real world is probably worth less than half that.

Yeah, they come out of hiding during election season, sowing the seeds of discord and dissent within the threads.

Yes they do.

Pat Buchannan conservative=borderbot.

That is the root of the dissatisfaction with the Republican Party. What we are seeing are people blinded by their feelings about illegals. In many cases, in the absolute, these people are right.

But their aims take time, and they are pissed it's happening slowly. They want to punish someone for it, and the Repubs are it because Dems don't give a sh*t to start with.

Yeah but aren't they mostly just RINOs? That's what I would expect there. I'm honestly surprised Santorum EVER got elected as conservative as he is overall. I feel bad for the many solid conservatives in PA that have to tolerate all the gutless wonders that claim to be Republicans. Especially since PA only went for Kerry by about 5% I think, or close to 10%, I can't remember but it was MUCH closer then it was supposed to be. Sadly, all of the original States of the United States are souless hollowed out shells that do not represent the Constitution at all. It's really sad. The original 13 Colony States are now the antithesis of what they stood for 230 years ago.

Right. It's like a typewriter repairman still lamenting the loss of jobs in the computer age.

Buchanan has gone over the edge (IMHO) on the border issue by making it about Hispanic culture, not about illegal aliens. His book claiming that there wasn't Hispanic culture in the Southwest is complete BS..

The issue is about Illegal Immigration, not Hispanic culture. Hispanic culture has been and always will be an identifying part of the US just as we have Euro-centric culture in the Northeast, Cajun culture in S. Louisiana and Native American culture.
