Why Gas Prices Dropped money.cnn.com ^ | October 16 2006 | Nelson D. Schwartz

Posted on 10/16/2006 10:31:49 AM CDT by kellynla

(Fortune Magazine) -- If the recent plunge in gas prices is the result of a conspiracy by President George W. Bush to help the Republicans retain control of Congress, as 42 percent of Americans believe, according to one Gallup poll, a lot of Wall Streeters wish they'd been in on the plot.

So what really drove prices down - if not an Oliver Stone-worthy scenario involving the Commander-in-Chief, the House of Saud and Secretary of the Treasury Hank Paulson cajoling his cronies at Goldman Sachs to sink the crude market?

By late summer, hedge funds and other investors had poured billions into long positions in oil, gasoline, natural gas and the rest of what traders call the "energy complex," all betting on a replay of the severe 2005 hurricane season that sent prices soaring in the wake of Katrina and Rita. But one day after oil reached a monthly high of $76.98 a barrel on Aug. 7, government meteorologists downgraded their hurricane forecast and cautioned that a repeat of 2005 was "unlikely."

That announcement, combined with the end of the summer driving season and a recalibration of the Goldman Sachs (Charts) commodity index that reduced the weighting of gasoline, prompted speculators to head for the exits even faster than they'd piled in.

The switch in Goldman's basket of commodities had been previously announced by the firm, but that didn't stop the conspiracy theorists.

There are certain people not worth your effort to respond to.

Life is too short.

Something I always found funny.. Many on our side scream from the rooftops that President Bush is a moderate and not 'conservative enough' at the same time the liberals scream from the rooftops that President Bush is a radical right wing ultra conservative.

Well, 25% of the US is brain dead. I guess 12% of FR being the same isn't too bad.

http://www.craigslist.org/

It is like a newspaper classified pages, except there is a section labelled erotic, which is pretty vile. TO get to the erotic, you have to click on a warning page.

I suggest it be blocked if you have children.

You notice those who want to teach Republicans a lesson were 'drive by' posts?

I understand what you mean, but I am too new to Free Republic to know who is "drive by". Your word on the subject rings true, so I accept it. ;>)

Exactly, and the DUmmies find Bush is a bigger terrorist than the terrorists themselves.

Your remark about punishing the person for being not conservative enough reminds me of a movie I saw last night. (On FoxMovies) It concerned 2 teenage boys in NYC during the struggle to establish a homeland for Israel. It brought out the fact that the Hassidic jews in NY fought tooth and nail against it because scriptures said the homeland would be established by the Messiah.
I'd never heard that before but I presume its true. Of course Israel was established in spite of it. Lesson: we have to keep our majority and work to make it more conservative.

I'm not alone. Laura seems to have lost a considerable part of her audience, here on FR.

She was crafty, did a very clever show during the 2004 election. But she's come a long way from her Thumbelina routine. She took a turn during Katrina and has been on a tear ever since. But to weaken the party at this time, by callinf for Hastert's head is, well I don't have another word for it.....stupid.

Caller makes a good point: its all about turnout.

Dems/media are trying to suppress the GOP vote. It is frustrating that some 'stay at home conservatives' are helping them.

I wonder if there will be a backlash and more Repub voters come out?

Yes, I've seen that, too. But I don't know if it indicates ill health, or maybe just old age.

And this with North Korea will be important to voters too. Who exactly do voters trust with this kind of problem? The GOP, or the party of Clinton, who gave North Korea the technology and material to make these bombs in the first place? I think that answer is clear.

And it needs to be stressed I believe, that those nuts that were instrumental in 'talking to' NK are now condemning Bush for not 'talking to' those countries that want to kill as many Americans as possible! Why would you talk to someone you know has lied in the past, will lie in the future, and is likely lying to you right now? Everytime I see Madeline not-so-Bright toasting Kimmy boy on T.V. it makes my blood boil! You want another attack on American soil in a shorter period of time? Vote for Dims or stay home! You want to see the further erosion of American soveriegnty? Vote for Dims or stay home! You want the US to cut and run? Vote for Dims or stay home! As for me and my house, we will vote Republican!!!
