Your remark about punishing the person for being not conservative enough reminds me of a movie I saw last night. (On FoxMovies) It concerned 2 teenage boys in NYC during the struggle to establish a homeland for Israel. It brought out the fact that the Hassidic jews in NY fought tooth and nail against it because scriptures said the homeland would be established by the Messiah.
I'd never heard that before but I presume its true. Of course Israel was established in spite of it. Lesson: we have to keep our majority and work to make it more conservative.
Was the movie "The Chosen", with Robbie Benson and Barry Malkovich? Chaim Potok's book did chronicle very accurately the conflict among American Jews over the creation of Israel. Very interesting read, in addition to being a great novel about two boys coming of age.
