Out From Under The Bus (CT Senate race)
The Hartford Courant ^ | October 18, 2006 | Hartford Courant editorial

Alan Schlesinger just might make the U.S. Senate race in Connecticut competitive and lively after all.

-snip-

Mr. Schlesinger, the state convention-blessed Republican nominee, was at a lowly 4 percent, having been disowned by many leaders and most of the rank and file of his own party. The Senate campaign had lost its zip.

At the Monday debate in Stamford, however, Mr. Schlesinger exhibited a nothing-left-to-lose flair in attacking Mr. Lieberman, mainly, and Mr. Lamont. His performance could stir the embers of this campaign and just might wake up more than a few Republican voters.

The GOP standard-bearer has been weighed down by a casino gambling history that is at least a political problem if nothing more. He got past that at the debate, demonstrating a more than passable understanding of issues such as Medicare and Social Security financing and having some success in framing himself as the conservative alternative to two liberal Democrats.

Mr. Schlesinger was slightly bumptious and entertaining in declaring he had been "thrown under the bus" by the media but has recovered, brushed himself off, "And look out Ned and Joe, here I come, baby!"

If he comes far enough, the independent/Democrat Mr. Lieberman, who counts on gaining a sizable share of Republican votes to win his fourth term, has reason to worry.

Mr. Schlesinger won't win the Senate seat, but if he shakes things up in the next two debates, he could help decide who does.

...and that would be Comrade Ned Lamont.

It would be funny if Mr. Schlesinger downed both Comrade Ned and "I'm an Independent" comrade Lieberman. It would deal a real blow to the Dems! Pray that it comes to pass!

If Republicans voted for Republicans, he just might win.

If Republicans listen to the likes of Hannity, and vote for the Lieberman, who IS a Democrat, who VOTES Democrat, and who stated that he WILL CAUCUS with the Democrats, then the Schlesinger will be defeated.

I fail to see the logic of a Republican vote for Lieberman. Lieberman's voting record stinks. Let them split their ticket. Don't aid and abet, at least try.

...but Hannity will like you 'cause you're a reeeaaal amerrrriiicccaaannn....

But then, its Connecticut, land of the poeple who spanked and tossed Lowell Weicker out of the Senate, and elected him Governor some years later and got an state income tax for it.

I listened to some of this debate and I must say, after all of the terrible things I have heard about Schlesinger, he was not bad at all.

"If Republicans voted for Republicans, he just might win."

That is simply not the case, Schlesinger has too much baggage from his casino antics. If every Republican in the state votes for him he still can't get elected. In order to win he would need some independent/democratic votes which are not forthcoming.

Repubs need to hold their nose and vote for Joe just as they did when Lowell Weicker ran.

If this moonbat Lamont wins it will be because Republican's allowed it.

Connecticut voters are faced with choosing the lesser of to evils, I will be voting for Liberman.

The people of Connecticut will have to wait 6 more years before having a chance of voting in a Republican candidate, let's hope next time we can look forward to a viable candidate.

Funny aint it? The ratmedia never seems to get as giddy about a Republican's debate performance if doing so would actually help him get elected. The Republican in this election won't break 8 points and he shouldn't. He lied to the state committee and has problems that can't be brought to Washington as a senator.

Don't forget 2010 - the other Senate seat is elected then. I don't know how beatable Dodd will be then, but it's still a chance.

Dodd, (Shudder) this POS is like Teddy Kennedy. No mater what he does or says the people in this state continue to reelect him, unbelievable.

It would not only be funny if Schlesinger won but it would be cause for FReepers to join the moonbat left in screaming FRAUD! It would be no funnier than allowing Charles Manson to be paroled and run a security or baby-sitting service.

Schlesinger is utterly useless and does not deserve the votes of his own family. Comrade Ned Lamont has no business being in the US Senate. The only effect of Schlesinger votes is to make Comrade Ned into Comrade Senator Ned. That will encourage the Howard Deans to wander the nation, making YEEEEEEARGH an effective rallying cry.

There is no reason whatever to suggest that Lieberman is a communist. In his first campaign when, with support from Bill Buckley and Tom Scott, he beat Lowell Weicker (a truly major public service f ever there was one), Lieberman attacked Weicker for visiting Cuba to scuba dive with Fidel Castro. Weicker made the mistake of seeing to it that his corpulent carcass appeared on Connecticut TV cavorting with Fidel. Lieberman showed the tape in an ad, introduced his Holocaust Survivor in-laws who showed their Auschwitz tattoos and said: "In our family, we don't need lessons on what is wrong with totalitarianism. If I am your Senator, you won't find me scuba diving with Fidel or anyone like him." For eighteen years, he has been as good as his word. I may disagree with 80% of his vote on matters of domestic controversy. Nonetheless, he has some of our principles (foreign policy, defense, Terri Schiavo) and that is something that Schleinger cannot say. Friend Weicker had actually attacked Ronaldus Maximus for bombing Muammar El Qaddafi.

Repave the road and this time put Schlesinger under the pavement. I did not check your homepage for your state of residence. I moved to Illinois 6 years ago from Connectcut where I had lived since my long ago birth. I am acquainted with Lieberman and I know Schlesinger. Trust me that the GOP does not need an embarassment like Schlesinger but America needs Lieberman's vote on foreign policy and defense in the climate that follows the 2006 election.

Oh, and in 1976, when Ronaldus Maximus challenged Gerald Ford, I was Reagan's Connecticut Chairman (when they had trouble getting someone respectable). Schlesinger was one of two state convention delegates to respond to a letter from me asking for (a strategically vital) three Reagan delegates (including the State Senate GOP Leader) of thirty five national convention delegates by being nasty and whining and claiming that support for Reagan was disloyalty to the GOP and to unforgettable Gerald Fudd, errr Ford (the GOP version of Jimmuh Cahtuh). The other letter was a respectful response from State Rep. and Ford Chairman Otto Newman of Granby who politely declined the request.

The election of Comrade Ned Lamont, grandson or great nephew of the infamous Corliss Lamont (Google for full info) would be on a par with electing Alger Hiss's grandson or Gus Hall's.

If the sun appears to rise in the East, if rain falls, if grass grows, Schlesinger WILL be not only defeated but slaughtered. The only question in Connecticut is whether it will be Lieberman or Red Ned. BTW, Schlesinger would be unlikely to vote as conservatively as Lieberman. He is a lightweight who would stick his finger in the air on everything. Fortunately, he won't have the chance. Check out his record as mayor of Derby.
